I have aquired a 1913 dwm action with fine surface pitting and some deeper scratching on one sied of the receiver ring above the stock line(bummer!)The reciever and bolt have matching No's.and is otherwise in great working order.ie nice play free lock up and little bolt play on full open.How much metal in .ooo" can I remove from the reciever ring to remove scratching without compromising action strength.forget leagalities.Action will be rebarelled in 7x57.If it wasn't for the deeper sratching it would polish up into a real beauty. | ||

I really don't know what would be the safe maximum amount you could take off but I commonly take off .010" when surface grinding an action to remove a crest or other imperfections. Pits deeper than that should be welded up prior to grinding. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA! | |||

Thanks John.The marks in question are probably about .020" and I probably will tig weld over them. I recon that if I just Zap them bit by bit over some time I will avoid any significant heat build up around the internal lug bearing area.Dose this sound right?.I have alot of welding experience and understand the case hardening metalurgy bit but my machining experience is limited.will heat treatment be absolutely necessary?I am getting different messages on this. | |||

Assuming you're going to have that action heat treated after "TIG"ing the holes shut I can see no reason for you to be concerned about the tempering of the ring by heating with the TIG torch. Further, if you're heading for the 7 X 57 cartridge, I can see no reason why you can't surface the ring all the way to small ring '98 Mausers and then use scope bases for the small ring. Thank you again all.I'got the confidence to go!But there's that term again that I think causes a lot of confusion."Tempering".As I understand the heat treatment is primarally about "case hardening" the surfases that are subject to ware and where this case hardening is compromised for example in lapping lug surfaces or excessive heat exposure from welding without adequate heat control.Where the case hardening has been removed from a vital area during ie truing up an action, then we get the action re heat treated to reinstate the case hardening.Case hardening on the outside of the action is really just a buyproduct of the neccessary hardening of the "inside" of the action and not at all related to fundamental action strength.Sorry John I'm going to do that search now.Please shoot me down if I,m badly off track here. | |||
