What do I have to do to get 4 down in a Win m70 classic originally chambered in 300 WM. I know I have to lengthen it by replacing parts that is taken care of. I am talking mag box. Can I get a longer one somewhere? Does someone make one?

Come on this has to have been done before. As simple as this action seems (this is my first m70) it seems like someone would be making replacement parts for this sort of thing.

I just looked a Blackburn's website and they offer a 4 and a 5 down. No prices.

I would think that the way the 70 is designed someone would offer something like this in a "cheap" version. With it being an internal part I think you could get along with something similar to the original just deeper. Wouldn't have to be CNC'ed out of solid stock.

I called them last week about some bottom metal for a mod 70 404J project and they quoted me $365.

I have the Sunny Hill on my 375 H&H M70...the problem is you have to restock the rifle to make it look right.
I bought a "Rigby" (I think) style floorplate from Wisener's for my 550 in 416 Riby. It replaces the oringal floorplate on the bottom metal and adds an additional round. No alterations to stock necessary. I don't know if there is something like this available for the M70 or not, or if one for the CZ can be modified. It needs to be fitted and blued, but the cost was around $75 delivered...quite a bit cheaper than either Blackburn or Sunny Hill. Hopefully someone else with more experience on this will chime in.

I have started two threads on basicly the same subject and have had limited replies on both. I think everyone would rather argue about whether XXX brand of rifles is a POS or if RRR brand is. Who the hell cares! Shoot whatever the hell makes you happy lets talk about making them better.

Sunny Hill lists their mag boxes as 4 down. I think Recknagel sells mag boxes as components but I'm not sure if they have them for the M70. As a thought, maybe you could talk a manufacture such as WF Hien out of one their boxes as they make properly dimensioned boxes for their actions that should work on a M70.

ElCaballero, it just might be that those yapping on the POS threads don't have a clue about high classed rifles like you're trying to put together.

Brownell's and Midway are both out of the Factory parts I would need. I still like the idea of the Blackburn box. It would solve everything but the follower.

What is the best way to contact them? I will look for a website.

I'm pretty sure a proper follower is included with Blackburn's bottom metal/Mag box package. Give them a call to be sure though.

This THREAD Has a photo or two of Blackburns mag box. You can see that it is quite a bit different from the factory box.

I am curious about something. Has ANYONE received any bottom metal from Blackburn in recent times????

I have had a Mex 1910 on order for several years and the only thing I have heard was in response to a call a year ago.

Anyone get anything recently???

Many have replaced the factory M70 Safari Express magazine spring w/ the Wisner #MS spring to improve feeding. Some have also found that this spring compresses flatter allowing a 4th round in the mag box using factory bottom metal.

I think it depends on the inletting in the stock as some have the action and/or the bottom metal deeper in the inletting which reduces the available space. On my factory M70 416Remington, I'm just a hair short inletted/bedded as is out of the box. It does appear not that difficult to modify existing parts to allow the extra room needed to get the 4th down.

It didn't help my M70 375 H&H.

No Chic,

I asked for a M-98 404J box from a run that was supposed to be done in three weeks. That was, I think, about six months ago. I have gotten triggers, but no boxes.

One thing about the Sunny Hill boxes. You will want to weld or solder a piece of reinforcing steel on the front of the box to prevent battering from the bullet noses. That or add recoil shoulders.

I spoke with them earlier today about some M70 bottom metal I have on order and they are suppossedly in the middle of a run for M70. Hopefully that means sooner than later...

ElCaballero,

As far as I know the SunnyHill comes with its own box but I see no reason the factory box would not work. Unless the bottom metal has a mortise specifically for their mag box that would preclude a nice fit of the factory box.
