Gun cleaning: Use bulb-type liquid dropper

For those of you who have not already thought of this: I've found an excellent way to get gun cleaning liquids into the bore of a gun without spilling them and without getting too much.

First of all, use a bore guide.

Second, get a bulb-type small dropper (like a minature turkey baster) -- you can get them for about $2 in the baby-stuff section of a supermarket or drugstore. This will allow you to pick up a small quantity of cleaning liquid (such as Shooter's Choice or Bruce's Bore Shine) and transfer it from the bottle to the bore guide. If you try pouring from the bottle directly into the bore guide you will almost always spill some or get too much into the bore -- usually both of those will occur. But with the little dropper you can pick up a small amount and then transfer it to the bore without spilling it and without getting too much into the bore.

This beats a funnel because with a funnel you still have the problem of pouring just a little and of keeping the funnel in place while pouring.

Another good idea is to use small solvent bottles with screw-down, captive caps for your bore cleaner. I've seen them used by other shooters, but can't find them in the drug stores.

Our local HVAC supply house sells light oil in a "Zoom Spout" bottle. The spouts pull out about 3". I empty the oil into a Plews can and then put my bore cleaner in the Zoom Spout.

Check out Brownell's little 'accordian' style solvent bottles--they are very easy to control the amount with, and they have a little cap which helps prevent evaporation. They are cheap enough that you don't care if you trash one.

They also carry little dropper bottles at craft stores, like Michaels. The work great.

I've long used the disposable plastic droppers used in medical laboratories for sucking up urine specimens to put on microscope slides.

Go to your local GM dealer and buy a can or two of GM Top Engine Cleaner. It's about $7 per 16-ounce can and is the same stuff as for which you'd pay $8 for a little 4-ounce bottle of Shooters Choice, et cetera.
