What would it take to go from the 7MM Remington mag to a 7MM Dakota in a Remington 700 action? What about a 7mm Remington Ultra mag?

I would consider the STW if I was you. I would think just a rechamber would be about all you would need. As for Dakota the brass is too high and if you look at the load data in the Barnes manual the STW will deliver more velocity. As for the ultra I believe you would have to cut out the sides of the magazine, open up the rails. I own a STW and also a 7mag. which I am considering rechambering to a STW. The STW gives me about 200' per sec. than the 7mag. The info. I posted was not from my personal knowledge of the ultra, but from info. I received from others on this board. The STW I can attest to. Hope this helps. fws

I agree with Toto. All you have to do to convert your M700 to STW is lengthen the chamber; no magazine, feed rail, or bolt face work. Your magazine will still hold as many cartridges, as opposed to one less with the fatter rounds. Brass, dies, and everything else is also cheaper for the STW. Performance should be very similar to the Dakota, and, except for burning less powder, indistinguishable from the 7mm Ultramag, especially in a 24" barrel.

I'd be careful on just rechambering from 7 Rem Mag to 7 STW. I did this about 3 years ago and while the rifle shot great, the chamber didn't clean up completely. There was a small bright ring on every case I fired right where the 7 Rem Mag shoulder used to be. After I checked the case dimensions, I noticed that the diameter at the shoulder of the & Rem Mag is slightly larger than the shoulder to the 7 STW. If your 7 Rem Mag chamber is not a SAAMI minimum chamber or if the 7 STW reamer is for a SAAMI minimum chamber, it might not clean up completely.
