Thinking of getting another barrel for one of my Savage rifles.

Recieved three quotes for finish chambered, crowned, and threaded bead blasted stainless barrels:

ERShaw $237

Douglas $326

Pac-nor $340

Those prices are for the finished product shipped.

I feel like Douglas or Pacnor will probably be the best bet but, I didn't want to leave out shaw since they do make "ready to go" Savage barrels. Any of you had a ERShaw that would shoot?

Which would you choose?

E R Shaw is an OK barrel.....but I'm thinking you'll wait a long time for it.

I had one in .375 H&H that shot very well. I would say as good as the original Pre-64's I have had during the years. Far better than one of the originals. No complaints.

Vapo, Yes they definitely have a longer wait. Twice that of the other two makers.

Probably would be worth the extra 90 to get a better product faster.

I contacted SSS since they offer Douglas for the Savage Actions. There price will probably be close to the price douglas gave me direct if not more.

Never had a bad Shilen. Never owned a Pac-Nor.

I agree with Vapodog. I understand that they are of much better quality now than those I used in the past. My only "real" complaint was that they were very heavy and I had them recontoured so in the long run I didn't save any money. as an aside, I had very good luck with Harry McGowen's barrels. I bought them contoured to my specs. Vapo, have you used any of Harry's barrels?

Haven't tried one yet, but Lothar-Walther has attractively priced pre-fit Savage barrels too.

No....my problem is that I became so used to Douglas as a "go-to" product that I don't use much else.

I've used Shaw, Shilen, Wilson, MRC, A&B, and Schneider as well as Douglas and I just keep coming back to Douglas....because they have the contours I like and they just work well.

I have nothing against other makers.....just no reason to pay more than a Douglas. Damn things just work!!!

I will say that the last one I bought (a #3 in .375 was so rough on the outside I had to work an hour to polish it the way it needed to be.....If I change, it'll be to Shilen I think.

I have had several Shaw barrels, and most have been OK; however, I have had one that gave us fits.

My absolute favorite rifle is a 9.3x62 with a Montana Rifle Works barrel on it. I would certainly recommend their barrels and their prices are very competitive; they were very prompt in providing mine; and my 'smith said they were very nice to work with. Kudude

Of all my rebarreled rifles the best barrels are Krieger, Shilen and Lilja in that order.
