John,
Jim sent me the photo earlier this afternoon. He said it was in the 50's and they were discussing elephant hunting as that was their passion at the time.

So it is John Buhmiller? Early/mid 1960's? Pretty sure it's not P.O.Ackley.

As mentioned earlier,Jim sent me this photo and said Buhmiller was showing him his muzzle breaked big bore. He also said it was in the 50s.

It's John Buhmiller, the builder of the first rifle chambered for the .378 Weatherby Magnum necked up to .45. Later, when brought out as a factory cartridge as the .460 Weath. Mag.
The picture was taken at John's shop there in Montana.
Part of his story is told in the first Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders by Parker O. Ackley.
Have fun,
Gene.

He was quite a character. Wish I had known him. Carmichael had quite a full career. His latest book is pretty good.

John Buhmiller was an amazing gunsmith/shooter.

He built a bullpup for Perry that was so successful they banned it.

Yup. That is Uncle John Buhmiller on the left. The greatest big bore cartridge and bullet developer, gunsmith and African big game hunter that nobody has ever heard of.
