I have a Ruger Number 1 .22-250. I want to have Ruger install a .204 Ruger barrel. It is not a bolt gun, so there is no bolt modification. What else is involved; just replacing the extractor? Thanks in advance. Never allow the perfect to be the enemy of the necessary.

If you have Ruger do it, you pretty much answered your own question. If some smith, lots. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

Unless Ruger has changed their policy, they will not do anything to a gun other than to put it back to the condition and configuration it was when it left the factory. The only exception I know of is the conversion of the old "3 screw" Blackhawks to make them safe to carry with a round under the hammer.

Concho, I went to the site before I started this thread. It is a very generic site. Nothing says what will or won't be done as far I can see. Did I miss something? Never allow the perfect to be the enemy of the necessary.

Yeah, I will ask anyway. I don't consider it custom work. Maybe symantics. What's the worse that can happen..."NO!" Never allow the perfect to be the enemy of the necessary.

IF both barrels have the same countour, then all you need do is replace the barrel and extractor/ejector. If there's a difference in barrel contour, then the forend must be replaced (if the new barrel is smaller) or hogged out to fit, if new barrel is larger. The No. 1 should be one of the simplest actions to change barrels on. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

In the past Ruger has not changed calibers but has offered the services of an outside person near the NH plant for work like rebluing etc. I contacted them about a barrel I wore out on my 1A and they said that they would replace it with a new one. After the rifle was there they discovered that they no longer made 1A barrels in 7mm RM and I got a 30-06 which is what I wanted. This did not happen easy. I don't think that Ruger will change it for you but they may sell a .204 barrel to thier outside service for you. Join the NRA

Unless something new has happened, the big makers won't change calibers on a gun they produced because the BATF considers it a "new" gun and wants their 11% excise tax again. Also, the paperwork required to let all the proper channels know of the serial no./caliber change is also impractical. Just to much PIA for a big company. if it helps any I did this from a 06 to a 204. I used a pac-nor barrel & changed the extractor. End of story - shoots 1/2" groups. I doubt ruger will to this for you but any decent smith will & you'll get a much better barrel

Unless the 22-250 barrel is worn beyond hope it has it's greatest value assembled where it is now. The fastest way to get a #1 204 is to buy a new one. Join the NRA
