I posted this on another web site and and request help on this sub-forum. ******* I believe that 98k barrels are 1.100 inches at the chamber. How far does this military barrel maintain this exterior diameter until it begins taper? Regarding sporting rifles like Browning Safari, Interarms Mark X, and FN or 98 other Mauser sporters, what are exterior dimensions at chamber and how far is this diameter maintained before beginning taper. If these commercial Mauser sporting rifles have sporting taper beginning closer to barrel's threaded shank, please identify this taper's beginning. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

By using the model 98K, you are referring only to the Kar98K made from 1934 to 1945, only. Those will be marked on the side; MOD 98, and in 1945, blank. And with many different makers codes which I won't list here. The 1.1 inch OD is extended forward of the barrel, for another .209 inches. I just measured one of the hundred or so that I have, just for you. Anyway, those are all large ring, large thread; 1.1 x 12 inch. FNs and GEW 98s use the same as do VZ24s, Spanish 43, Polish 29, and most common Mausers we butcher up for porters. Now, on commercial barrels, the OD of the barrel forward of the threads varies in size and length; there is no standard. They vary from 1.15 to 1.25 or so, and extend for 2-3 inches, and for the full barrel length on a bull. What is the real problem you want to solve? Of course there is a list of small threads, but you asked about the 98k.

Reads like he wants to know how much of the chamber can be turned off to do a re-thread and re-chamber job. As you point out, that varies with the brand and contour of the barrel.

Then he can do what the Germans did when fitting MG13 barrels onto Kar98ks; make a bushing to adapt the smaller threads to the larger one.
