My customer has requested some photos of his action I am working on. It is a case of his own design based on a shortened and necked down rigby. It came me with feeding problems and I have gone to great lengths to correct it and save the action. I'm not quite finished but will add pics as I progress.

It is my action and it was designed by Greg Hein to work with the cartridge that I desgned a WSM length Rigby. I was lucky enough to get an almost complete rigby scaled short action from Greg before all the crap hit. Nick has been kind enough to finish up the action and make it feed along with some other goodies he will be showing along the way.

Yes this was designed for this case but it wouldn't feed when I got it and there wasn't enough rail left to work with. My only option was to completely cut out the rails I then soldered pieces in and re machined them. I experimented with a center feed first since I had the extra material but I couldn't get the cases to stack in the magazine and its supposed to hold four down so single stack wasn't an option.

Sounds like a good thing that Hein is out of the custom action business. It was not a highly rated receiver when Noreen made them, and it doesnt sound like they got any better with Hein at the controls. Just out of interest, was the barrel tenon thread rough as it came from Hein? The ones I saw were,.. sub standard for a custom receiver.

over all the action is of high quality threads were as good as any thing else. My only complaint is it has more metal than I think it should (a little on the heavy side) the bottom metal is really thick and heavy to.

action, bottom metal & follower [excluding bases] would be near 3lb? to hold 4 down of Rigby dia., does that mean it has a dropbox?
...looking forward to progress reports on this rare bird combo.

Thank you very much for posting the pics! That is a great save on an action that was hosed up. I have not seen that way of saving an action after too much metal has been taken from the rails.
What solder and metal did you use in the save?
I am assuming the action was alreadt heat treated, is that correct?
Would you have done anything differently if it was not heat treated or you planned on re-heat treating the action?
In the pics it looks like "8620" is on the bottom of the recoil lug. I am assuming that is what the action metal is, or is that a serial number that happened to be the same as a metal name?
Thanks!

Well it actually says 2620 I thought the same thing at first but I am assuming it is the s/n. I used hi force 44 and yes it is heat treated. The heat required for 44 will not effect the heat treat. I can successfully solder with 44 and get none to maybe a very slight straw color which is below tempering temperature. I thought about welding and re heat treating but I think this is a better deal besides if it didn't work or I goofed the worst I had to do was solder in new pieces.
