I would like someone else to verify this stock identification if possible ?. I think I know what it is

and the time frame from which it came . Mag well is 4" plus by 1" plus obviously a right hander .

It has either gold or now amber accent lines around butt rosewood fore end and grip cap checkering is

original as is finish NO REFINISH !. It has scratches and a couple of small nicks nothing that coudn't

be sanded out and checkering is Sharp with extremely minor if any scratching . Given the dimensions

of the mag well what action do you figure set in this stock ?. It's not bedded either and has what

appears to be an original Butt Pad with manufactures name on it .

It looks like a post 64 Win 70 stock, but a view of the inletting would confirm.

Looks a good bit like the Win 70 XTR stock listed on Peter's classified post (Peter's For Sale Listing). Different recoil pad but - one could be replaced??

What would you figure is a fair price or possible trade for this stock ?.

Sorry about the " Reddish Blush " my deck is redwood and it picks up the hue from it and I was

unable to find a white sheet . There is dust all over and in the in letting of this stock .

It's been inside an old gun cabinet out of the light for better than 25 years now , so it's not new !.

I know what caliber came out of it but dammed if I can remember the action !!. I thought it was

a Remington in Winchester 375 circa early too mid 60's .

That's what I thought, but wasn't sure. May be from a little later period, late 60s-early '70s, but not much later. IIRC there were about 50 of these 375s made, along with about 50 of the 458s, and they are extremely rare and expensive. For instance a friend bought one with a broken stock, repaired it, and got close to $3000 for it, about 8 years ago.

Rem 700 Wow! Nice finish from early Remington! I hated their typiucal poly finish. Nice checkering too!

AG1, these 375 and 458 700s were made by what passed for the Remington Custom Shop back then, that's why there were so few. I personally have never seen one but recall that they were significantly more expensive than the regular 700BDL in any other belted magnum chambering, and they had special rear barrel sights.

I was told that the 700 458s would knock your dingus in the dirt if you were so foolish as to shoot one. I've owned a pre-64 M70 458 and was told that it was a pussycat by comparison to the Rem. The Win 458 was the worst-kicking rifle I have ever owned or in fact fired, so if the Rem 458 is worse then someone else can shoot it!

So is it safe to say it's an Earlier Remington 700 Stock ? . It's most definitely a LA as the mag well

is 4" X 1" plus a little . At one time I almost had the complete action for it .

A close friend was going to give it to me but he had misplaced the bolt for it ( Kids grand kids in the

house so he removed it ) So I tried to get Freddy Brunner to fix me up with one . Ill timed fate

as Fred's wife had become seriously ill with cancer . Then about 3 months later my

friend had a massive coronary while getting dressed to go see the doctor ( Ironic ) !.

I never got the action or the bolt , so nothing got put together and I didn't

pursue acquiring the action from his Wife or their son !!. I ended up with the stock as originally

I was going to refinish it then assemble it complete . Dam that was a while back !.

Being a lefty it doesn't really suit me although I've cross handed most of my life now .

Wondering what to do with it now , don't even know if a current 700 action would fit it ?.

So that's kind of why I asked about a trade or value of the stock .

Doc, I go to a Geezer Breakfast every Thursday where we do show-&-tell about our guns, that's where I got some of the info about the 375 700s. Tomorrow morning I'll ask the source of the info about more details such as who might be interested in it for the most money, etc. and will report back when anything is learned.
