Slim_ZippyFN Mauser
I currently have a FN Mauser Supreme on hold at a gun shop. The blue is in about 98% condition. and the the stock is dirty and closet dinged. The rifles cost is $495.00 US. It is 30.06 Caliber. The rifle shows very little to no use on it. The stock has been cut to accomodate a butt pad. Is the gun worth the cost? How much difficulty am I looking at to clean the acculated closet dirt out of checkering and remove the dings? Should a novice attempt this or should I get a professional to do the work?

ramrod340As to the cost. Only you can really decide that. The repair depends on how handy you are. It is very easy to clean up and repoint the checkering. Dents can be raised with a wet rag and an iron. I use a large soldier iron to supply pinpoint heat. If the wood fiber has been cut then repair is harder.

Thanks for the reply. The rifle is intended for hunting and I wanted something that wasn't so beautiful that I'd be worried about marring the stock. I also hate hunting with a ugly gun. I think I will strip and refurbish the stock. I also didn't want to just buy a "pig in a poke" and find out later the value of the rifle was only a couple hundred dollars. If the project turns out well, I'll post a picture.

500grainsLocally I have seen FN's in that condition from $350 to $500, so I think the price you are seeing is the high end.
