Rem BDL DM problem : UPDATED

Folks

My detachable magazines, two of them, in a Remington BDL (.280 Rem caliber) have taken to throwing rounds out the side rather than chambering when attempting to chamber a round.

Can I do anything about spring strength? May be the wrong term -- perhaps I should say "the bent part below the follower"?

Anyhow, I've tried wiping rounds clean, degreasing the DM's at the sides in case lube / grit / whatever leftover from reloading was lubricating the shells, and so on.

Thoughts appreciated.

Where there are two magazines exhibiting the same problem, it sound like something else might be causing the trouble. If you walked into my shop with the gun, the first thing I would do to troubleshoot the problem would be to make sure (a) I had the right magazines, and (b) the bottom metal is installed correctly. Next I would eyeball the magazine's feed lips and work the follower to see if there were any obvious problems. Then I would load the magazines and look at how the rounds sit.

Then I would pull the firing pin and insert the magazine into the gun to see how it looks when it is locked into position. At this point, provided nothing appeared out of the ordinary, I would feed the rounds and watch to see what was happening. If I couldn't locate and solve the the problem based on these previous steps, then I would pull and inspect the individual components. It could be springs, but I wouldn't make that leap without first checking the whole system.

Thanks for the responses. In reloading I simply wipe off the Imperial or RCBS stuff without doing the tumbler-cleaning media thing.

Thought I saw a difference between plain brass and nickel-plated, but both do the same thing, at least after several reloadings. Haven't tried anything other than wiping down with Hoppe's (brass) or Gun Scrubber (mag sides and gun port.

Maybe I'll have the .280 looked at, mostly to learn something. It is a stand gun for me, and I can keep shells chambering as needed by covering the port with a few fingers.

You shouldn't have to settle for covering the ejection port with your fingers to get it to feed. Somethings wrong and it should be looked at and fixed.

It has quit doing it, for some reason. Will pay attention next year in case it starts again -- try to see if I can diagnose further.

Noticed you're back. Awright!

Hey, a Gander Mountain 'smith (be nice) worked out my problem. The rounds are shifting forward in the detachable magazine(s). Unless firmly loaded all the way to the rear they don't chamber right. At the range, by the third one it starts throwing 'em out the port instead of chambering.

Maybe I ought to try a modification / lengthen the side rail a bit / convert to BDL instead?

Anyhow, as a stand gun I'd only need three in anyhow.

You can't convert that receiver to a BDL. Were it mine I would scrub (throw away) the Remington bottom metal and box and replace it with the HS Precision unit. Problem solved.

I recently put together a Stiller Predator in 300WSM. It had PT&G bottom Metal and a Wyatt box. I was having rounds jump out of the mag well before they were far enough up in the chamber. I replaced the original Wyatt mag box with a Wyatt windowed/extended magazine. The factory Remington magazine spring was too strong so I replaced it with a Savage Short action spring. All my problems went away.

Still having the original problem despite monkeying with DM lips. Got a Kwik Klip kit from Cabela's and it solves the problem nicely. Now I have to find out whether being limited to 3.320" OAL by the magazine length matters. 175-grain Partitions are fine but the Hornady loads I had worked up are a tad long. Still, 80 bucks ain't 300. Thanks one last time.
