PlanemechBarrel and services advice.
Please tell me how you have liked the services of Pac-Nor. I have a zastava 98 action and will barreling it to 8x57. I'd like to use a Shilen but they do not chamber to 8x57. I have seen a number of people hear talking about Pac-nor and wanted to get feedback on their expiriences. Thanks guys.
If you like the Shilen brand of barrel, why not just purchase one and have it chambered by one of the fine Gentlemen here on AR that do barrel work.

Gringo CazadorI'd have to second that, get a shilen and find a good GS to screw it on and chamber it if thats what you want. No telling how many good GS's post on AR that can do it for a fair price to boot.

Yes...or better yet send your action to one and just tell them what barrel you want...let them buy the barrel.....

dempseyIf I wanted a Pac Nor barrel, I would have somebody else install it, preferably somebody local.

PlanemechI'm unhappy with the local smith, did a nice trigger job on my M77, but his floating job on the barrel leaves something to be desired, and I'd have to supply the reamers.
Suggestions of who is reasonable and does good work? Being as new as I am here I don't know who the smiths are.

vapodogIf your personal information included your location it would be easier to help...just a state is useful

KY NimrodThere are any number of good gunsmiths on the forums. If Pac-Nor screws on their own barrel and it doesn't shoot you can go back and get them to fix it. If anyone else screws it on he may or may not stand behind the work and Pac-Nor may or may not stand behind the barrel.
I do business with some of the people here and most are stand-up people. But its a question of know who you are doing business with. Ask for referrals.

vapodogGet out your map and find Imperial....there's a guy there with excellent equipment and does excellent work.
He can install any barrel on that action for you that you want and return it to you...
Imperial is in southwest Nebraska.
PM me if you're wanting more information

MasteriflemanJust got my third PAC-NOR barrel. First was a .404 Jeffrey (I chambered and fitted) as well as a 9.3 X 62. Bot the barrels shoot very well, 1 1/4 on the Jeffrey, Sub MOA on the 9.3. The third barrel I got was a pre-fit for a SAKO L461 in .204 Ruger. I hate cutting metric threads on my Taiwanese belt-drive lathe. The only problem I had, it was supposed to be deep chambered so that I could just cut the breech and shoulder to bring the headspace in line, it was short chambered. Called them and they offered to fit the barrel free or send me the reamer and gauges. I accepted the reamer and gauges, fitted the barrel on Friday and was shooting Sub-MOA groups on Saturday. I will buy PAC-NOR again and again.

Skinner.Another option is IT&D Custom Gun in Ohio, they're reasonable, the work quality is good and they use Douglas barrels.

jeffeossoPacnor makes pretty good barrrels... so does shilen, so the difference is mostly choice. Pacnor, i think, charges too much for installing a barrel, but, you know, if they want to limit their shop time, allowing someone to pay for convience isn't a bad thing.
it&d do good work with douglas barrels. just make certain you order it air gauged...

LRH270Tried the new Pac-Nor barrel on the 338 WM this morning.
WOW!
The chamber is WAY tighter than on the Win factory take-off, causing some difficulties with getting neck-sized reloads to chamber........... but the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd shots went into a 0.29" (yes, 29/100ths of an inch for 4 shots) 100 yard group. Off the truck tailgate, on a bipod. With two witnesses. But I can't get photobucket to upload the photo.
This was Jorge's "leopard load", 73.0 of RL 19 with a 210 Nosler Partition.
I think it's going to SA Thursday in lieu of the .270.

Glad it's shooting well. I hate to be the one to tell you, but you probably can't get your paperwork in order prior to thursday to take it...
I am certain you know this: any rounds fired in one chamber, then neck sized only will PROBABLY have trouble going into another gun... just an FYI

LRH270I had the PH send two letters, one with each serial number.....I'm sitting here with two sets of paperwork. (Engineers love redundency, and they repeat themselves a lot too)
But the neck-size thing was just a brain fart.
