I thought some of you might like to see what the breech of a Rem 760 looks like. If you remember i posted a poll on which to rebarrel a 760 to, a 9.3x62 or a 338-06. Its going to the later. The breech is as you can see two parts. One part is as slip fit & the end with the locking lugs screws onto the barrel. I machined a bit on the barrel & made a relief cut to be able to unscrew the breech components without messing any parts up.
I would like to thank Mike Brazda the owner of Bayou Teche Guns for the doner barrel for this project.

The threaded section is .875 OD 20tpi x .330 long. The slip fit section is .885 OD & the ring that slides on it is .8855 ID. Tigger it going to take a witness mark. I made a witness mark before I took it apart.

OEH I machined the relief cut on the barrel before I attempted to unscrew the locking lug section. All i can say is that it was not as tight as the majority of bolt guns that I have rebarreled in the past 30 years. The threaded section is only .330 long & that would be a factor also.
CB I've been hunting with a 06 in a Rem 760 for years also & love it.

I still have the one I made up in the late 70s. I sent the barrel [old .270 Win]to Dick Nickel in WA and he rebored/rifled to 338. All I did when I got the barrel back was to run the 338/06 reamer in to make the neck/throat and that was it! Shoots real good. Real quick way to do it.

Humbarger - There is an article call, "Wildcat Pump for the Alaskan Hunter" by Jay Turner in a book called "Big Bore rifles and Cartridges" by Wolfe Publishing (copyrite 1991) that outlines just such a conversion with a few loads thrown in. I had a .35 Whelen rebore done by Nickle a few years back; however, I don't think he is available anymore. I have a 7600 in a .35 Whelen that is one of my favorite rifle; a .338/06 sounds like another good caliber in a great rifle. Regards, Mags
