I picked up a 1917 Enfield. It's an Eddystone that was sporterized a very long time ago. The headspace was off so the local smith set the barrel back a turn and recambered it. The barrel has had it, through the blue I can just make out 10-18 on the barrel. So who knows how many 100s of '06 were shot. Anyway the stock is walnut with some figure and it can stay. The action is great (6 down), with the ears milled D/T for weaver mounts and floor plate was straightened.
The question is should Eddystone actions be used for magnum cartridge conversions? It seems to be a shame to go to the trouble of re-barreling the action. Just to have another 30'06.
I'm not sure what direction I'm going to go with this, but I'm thinking 458 win

Lengthn the maag box, and do a Lott.

The 1917 is a U.S. rifle, we had no rifles refered to as "Pattern". It is the "Model 1917". Only the Brits call their rifles "Pattern"

If you are a handloader you could go with a .375 Whelen by having a rebore done. You wouldn't even have to modify the bolt face or get a new barrel.

You will hear people talk about Eddystone actions cracking. I researched the Eddystone cracking issue for a long time. Everyone I talked to that had ever worked with these actions and seemed to know what they were talking about attributed it to the Eddystone actions having their barrels put on with a overspun flywheel. With yours being already set back there may be no issue. However, if the barrel seems stuck your gunsmith needs to cut a relief cut just forward of the action and it should unbarrel without issue. Get the action magnafluxed at your local engine shop (remember these actions are almost 100 years old) and if it checks out barrel it in anything you want! These actions are one of the strongest ever made.
