Is renting a reamer a good idea? Does this work out as well as just buying the reamer, then selling after cutting one chamber?

What is a typical rental fee?

I'm looking to have my gunsmith cut a 8mm-06 chamber for me, and I'm just wondering what you guys are doing about chambering something unusual?

I rent for oddball chambers. I figure the preak even point is about 3 chambers. I've had good results renting reamers from 4D Reamer Rentals in Casper, WY

I also rent for the calibers I think won't sell much. Typically, the cost is around $50 with gauges and shipping for a floating pilot reamer. I already have a slew of reamers that will probably only cut one chamber; I don't need more.

I say buy, then sell. You will have piece of mind that the chamber was cut with a new reamer rather than one that may be in need of sharpening. And it'll probably cost you an extra $25 or $30 for that piece of mind. Think about the bigger picture...I have rented reamers with mixed results. The VERY odball chamberings probably don't get rented all that much, but an 8mm/06 aint that odd.

I always buy the reamer, so I can work at my own pace.

Some gunsmiths own the reamer, but charge for the rental.
That seems fair.
