I love watching these things come together, it makes the final pics so much more enjoyable. Almost makes you sad when the project is over, almost. Wink

Tell Duane to send that thing over here to Jennings when he is finished! That barrel is too long to hunt with where you live. The woods are just too damn thick! Big Grin

jaw: I think I would have preferred the rear sight a couple inches closer to the muzzle. Is there a particular reason it's set that far back? I'm sure Duane's workmanship is otherwise impeccable and the little 21's are a great starting point. You'll have a fine little rifle when it's all done.

stocker,

the placement of the rear site is copied from a late model oberndorf sporting mauser. it is nearly an exact copy and sleeved on the same way. the front sight is an original oberndorf sight. I just like the styling of the barrel contour and sights on those guns.

I have one of those actions laying around here somewhere and I like that whole approach, especially the rear sight placement. I would do a 7x64, as I have a near mint 21H in 7x57 and a pair of 22H re-chambered to .280 Rem now and have a Kreiger tube in .284 bore.

There is simply NO rifle I like more than a nicely modded or custom 21/22 series and yours looks like what one expects from Duane, masterwork...keep posting pix, please.

I would deerly love to have Duane build me a rifle. i could probably afford it if I was no addicted to buying up cool rifles of lesser quality when ever i find a good deal.
Mabye someday i will sell a few at a gunshow and make a start, but I like them all !

What a wonderful project! Mr Wiebe did one of these for ForrestB a few years back and I've been after him for pictures ever since.

I do hope you post pics through the build. I really like seeing them.

Yes, it started with the butterknife bolt handle but it had beed altered. The safety will be a low profile by Ed Lapour. The gun started as a 22F full stock. It had been altered quite a bit so I stripped it for the action and sold all the other parts.

Will you be using Talley QD mounts for this rifle?
And if so, what type suite it's dove tail?
Have a friend with the same 7x57 and is about to buy Talleys for it.
Cheers,
Adam

Adam, I am planning to use Talley rings that Duane will make some alterations to. The BRNO 600/550 series rings work on this gun.

Out of curiosity, what makes the BRNO actions so desirable?

very trim, lightweight, and the integral scope base

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I wanted the action because its a CRF 98 mauser action design with a small receiver ring, "C" cut collar and double square bridge with integral ring bases. The integral bases are very low and allow for installation of sights like those on the original sporting msusers.

If, you ever handle a Brno 21/22 or ZG-47 action, you will SEE right away why some of us are so keen on them. I have had six 21/22s and four ZGs and have four and three still; I have had FORTY P-64 Mod. 70s and have ten minty originals and one custom plus a whack of other "classic" rifles, a Dakota76 and whatever and, very simply, the Brnos are THE finest.

Somewhere along the line a previous owner had the action drilled and tapped for a reciever sight.

Duane took care of that. You might also notice a little shaping of the rear sight bridge.

Apparently this tool had something to do with it? Smiler

No......I've been patiently waiting for this project to start for well over a year now. These progress photos have me checking my email about 10 times more frequently than normal. I can't for the next one with the paper clip in the corner.
