I recently picked up a like new Remington 788 in 22-250. It's a great shooter, and I know that 788's are rising in price fairly quickly...however, what I really want is a bolt action .250 Savage. Is this a simple rebarrel job as it's based on the same case?

yup....simply rebarrel it /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

Well Brack2005 there is an interesting solution to your dilemma. If it shoots well now it means there is probably no stress in the barrel. Then check around for barrel makers that offer re-rifling. After being bored out and re-rifled .257 all the gunsmith will have to do is run in a neck and throat reamer. It will be a lot cheaper than a new barrel and it should shoot every bit as good as it did as a 22-250. Rod Henrickson When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. One thing you guys have forgotten about. The 788 magazine length is SHORT. We did a lot of these to 250 Sav years ago. But had to cut and weld the front of the magazine to make it longer. Then had to remachine the reciever to accept the longer magazine. Jim Wisner Custom Metalsmith

Speerchucker, you make it sound pretty simple. It ain't. Once you do a re-bore you can run into all kinds of trouble and set yourself up for a mess of stress in that barrel. He is probably cheaper off putting on a new one. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

Jim W .... you got me on that one bud, that conversion can be done but it ain’t hardly worth it. I converted a bunch of 700 short actions to 7 MM mags for some nutty swedes that wanted 5 lb rifles and even at $4,000.00 per I think I lost money. Jim K sorry but lots of guys like Ron Smith in Whimbourn Alberta still cut rifle. I agree %100 that button rifled barrels have to be annealed after completion but most barrel makers will agree that drilling and cutting does not impart any stress into the barrel. I should have been more specific on that though. Sorry. At any rate the jobs a wash opening the action well and TIG welding an extension to the front of the mag is to much work.
