What is the average trigger pull weight on a brand new rifle, say a Rem. 700 or Win. Model 70. What weight trigger pull do you guys like to have on your varmint & deer/antelope/elk rifles.

In the past there were somr reasonable triggers but when the lawyers started to design them it went down hill.I like a clean 3-4 lb pull for mine for typical hunting and perhaps a little lighter for varmint.

I try and set everything I own at 3#. That way they all feel pretty much the same.

As usual just my $.02

If available, I prefer a double-st trigger, adjusted to around 8 OZ. set weight. If not available, then a single-stage set at #2.5 for varmints, and #3-3.5 for larger game.

I'm not too sure about the average trigger pull from the majors but I once measured a Savage trigger on a new gun at 11 pounds. That was before their very fine accutrigger.

Besides pounds of pull there's creep and after travel and to mee creep is the worst of all. I'll actually take M-70 triggers to a surface grinder to reduce creep. Personally I like a liberal amount of aftertravel but most do not.

If you can get the creep out and set the weight of pull to 2.5-3 pounds you IMO have a very fine trigger for a hunting rifle.

Agreed! Creep is the worst-particularly on a handgun trigger, but always bad!!

I just got a Ruger, and the trigger was terrible. It was 8-9 lbs. with a lot of creep and was very gritty. After a bit of stoning of the trigger and sear surfaces, I got the grittiness out of it, and most of the creep. I replaced the trigger spring also, now it's 3 1/2 lbs., but I won't be satisfied till I get the rest of the creep out.
