Hi there,

I am looking for a short + light hunting rifle which is as rustproof as it can get (hunting by the sea). All German rifles aren't worth sh... in this regard, so I figured the Rem Police LTR would be ideal if I only knew how rustproof all the metal parts are...

Is it coated stainless steel, or coated carbon steel?
Are ALL metal parts stainless or coated? What kind of coating is it?

Sorry for the hair-splitting but I need the most rustproof finish of ALL metal parts I can get! Saltwater is a bitch...

Thanks very much for your help, best regards from Germany,

elwood.

Hello,
The PSS 700 is carbon steel, chrome moly, and the floor plate, trigger guard, etc. is aluminum. Finish is matte black/blueing, but not true parkerizing as in military weapons of years past. This version is designed more for your police-civilian tactical/ HRT teams, etc., but better than a sporting rifle for rugged use.
Now, the true M24 Military Weapon is stainless with barrel of 5R/12, bore/308 (other calibers available) with a coating of durable nature and would be more corrosion proof than most, but not sure if you can purchase in Germany. Law enforcement and military purhases only I believe, and would probably bring a whole bunch of unwanted attention in Germany unles you are military/law enforcement.
Expensive as a package, something over 5000 U.S for base unit. More elaborate grades includes optics M4/MK1 16x, etc. cleaning kits, bipod, military/commmercial grade case suitable for air transport shipping and "dropping..," bolt takedown tools, etc. Bottom metal on this unit is built to go to war with and so are the mounts and rings, etc. If you have the right credentials they will put together a package that includes just about anything you have ever heard of and then some and would survive about any environment possible. Of course you have to be a governmental agency to afford one of the little gems!!

If you like Remington maybe this is what you are looking for. Also thier Alaska Wilderness Rifle is Teflon coated stainless steel.

Clean it and wipe it off once in a while and you don't have to worry about rust. I hunt the seacoast (tidal estuaries) for birds all the time and I have never had a spot of rust on my blued steel guns.
I might consider stainless as a carry gun if I carried all day long every day, but so far I've managed to keep the ugly things out of my collection.

Put your nose to the grindstone, your belly to the ground, and your shoulder to the wheel. Now try to work in that position!

the military version sounds just the right thing for me! Even if I could afford one of those magnificent toys I still doubt they would ship it to a German address... Roll Eyes
Thanks for the hint anyway!

bluetick:
Very nice rifle indeed! If they offered it in .308 win, 5 inches shorter and 2 pounds lighter it would be MY rifle!

jlongo:
I dont know about your sea waterbut the water of our northsea is about as salty as it can get and I have seen many SS and f...-knows-with-what coated weapons that rusted like hell! Frowner

Well, I think I will have to take something like the Remington KS mountain rifle - but thanks very much for your input!

Happy Hunting! Big Grin
