I am sure someone here can give you some good tips. I am presently finishing my first stock and it is going really well. It is a laminate stock for my .416 Taylor. I can't believe how easy it is to use Tru-oil. I am considering re-finishing a couple other stocks I have. Really all that is involved is lots of sanding. I know you can use a wet facecloth and an iron to lift dents out of a stock, but I'd be pretty careful. I am not sure what to do around checkering, but I am thinking you could just work around it if it is in good shape. FWIW,

Canuck is correct, Truoil is a very good finish and easy to use, just follow directions... To raise dents use and iron and a wet rag and just keep steaming and sanding... Sand to 220 grit, use truoil filler a couple of times then go with 50-50 mix Truoil and Mineral Spirits and soak the stock until it won't take any more mix, let dry for 30 days ( this is absolutly critical ) then follow the directions of wet sanding and re-applying finish....With the 30 days drying of the first coat, the finish will never break down from moisture. thats the foundation that makes the difference. Otherwise your better off with a poly Urathane plastic finish. I could write volumes on stock finishing but the above is as good as any finish, when properly applied.... ------------------
