I am going to add a 3 position (Winchester style) safety to the bolt of my Daly Mauser action.

Which one do you think is the easiest to install (but still gives good function).

The Gentry? The Dakota? Others?

I have only had experience with one unit, the Dakota, which is a good unit, but in my opinion its not all that easy to install correctly. Best to have someone who does machine work install it for you. Trigger has to be set correctly, a hole has to be drilled exactly (or you will get sloppiness) and you have to round off a bit of metal on the cocking piece.

do yourself a favor and have a smith install it for you.

I might be in a minority, but i just don't like 3 position safeties. To often have I been caught with taking the safe off and finding it on the mid position. rather have a 2 position by far. If that idea suits you look down the posts a pit and jim kobe is making one for $95

others are:

-New England Custom Gun,(2 versions)

They all work essentially the same and require similar modifications to the bolt and cocking piece, so for me it comes down to looks and $$.

My preference is the Dakota.

22WRF offers good advice, you really should have access to a milling machine to get the best quality installation.

I just got mine back from David Gentry. I had him put one of his excellent 3-position safeties on my LH Daly MAuser I had barreled to 35 Whelen.





I am just waiting for my Laminated stock to be finished so I can use it in the fall

I have done a total of two Genty's and both were a PITA to do. They did not work correctly as there was a "timing" problem with them; the detent and ball correlation from the open to close position was not correct and caused the bolt to jam the cocking piece against the action. The Dakota is the same amount of work, the same price and is a better unit. NECG also makes a nice one as do others like Ed Lapour. I won't use another Gentry.

Is Ed Lapour now making one for Model 98 Mauser? I see his ads in Rifle and he doesn't list Model 98.

My favorite for use on Mausers is the Dakota/Grisel. Functions well and the gas flange is in perfect harmony with the contour of the receiver bridge.

I like Redknackgel and thats what I had placed on my impending .404 J.

My favorite was always Wisner's but I am not sure he is making them anymore.

As Jim & fla3006 have stated the Dakota is a fine unit. It's not hard to install just pay attention to details. I would prefer that the hole for the firing pin to be brooched like the orginal Mauser design calls for instead of the cost cutting manner in which they all use.

Nice to see so many folks going to the CD actions. That means more real Mausers left around for guys like me.

Well...now that is a tricky question to answer. I would have to say, if the new guy was good, go with him, if the old guy is bad.
