What is the best product & grit to use for lapping 98 mauser bolt lugs.

Brownells sells a neat spring loaded tool (about $40 bucks) and a 600 to 800 grit silicon carbide abrasive paste ought to do the job. Just make sure to really clean the area after you're done because you don't want the least bit of that abrasive staying in there.

I,m no expert on Mausers, but what I've read, it shouldn't be done since the metal is surface hardened only. You could lap thru this hardening. Maybe someone else can add more precise advise.

The problem with case hardened bolts and receivers is that if you go too far you remove the case hardened layer.If you've gone too far you can have the bolt and receiver re-case hardened but that should only be done by a heat treater who has experience doing it.The military mausers often have QC problems so the case hardening may not be very good to start with. In any case lapping the lugs is to insure full contact on both lugs, don't do it more than necessary.
