I just picked up this action from a fellow AR Member.

The bolt face has been opened up to a magnum bolt face, as the original intent was a .458 Win. As you can see it has a lot of work done to the action already. The bottom metal needs some more finishing work. I want to build this into a nice custom, so what else should I do to this action to clean it up?

I don't see myself hunting anything larger than elk or anything in the DG catagory for at least another 10-15 years. So this can be a long term build as I don't need to finish it right now.

Haven't decided on a chambering yet but I'm already running a .300 H&H on a 1917 Rem action and .375 Ruger on a M70 action. So I'd probably part with my Ruger if I built another .375 rifle. I don't want to run a caliber smaller than .308 in this rifle. The cartridges I already run larger than .308 bore are 8mm-06, .338-06, and .35 Whelen as well. Wouldn't mind going larger than .375 caliber as well.

I would build a 358 Norma mag or better yet a 358 STA.

How about a 404 Jeffery, that would be a nice classic combo.

Thought about both of those already, but really want a cartridge that will work well in a barrel around 22".

The 404 would be ideal and with the GS Custom HV bullet it becomes a real 300yd+ PG rifle as well as taking on the 'big stuff'.

Why not go with a 416 Rem?

Since your original intent was a .458 Win, got ahead and step up to the .458 Lott. It won't cost you anymore than the Win and you'll get more case capacity.

I'd be working on a .458 Lott right now, but I'm buying a house and are otherwise disposed at the moment. Everyone should own one at some point...

My orginal intent was to have a nice action to build on, the guy I bought it from had intended to build a .458 Win. I've considered the Lott, but not sure I'm wanting to go that direction. I've considered these cartridges .375 H&H, .416 Ruger or Taylor and the .458 Lott.

Nothing wrong with the Taylor, but the 416 Ruger makes it obsolete.

because of the action size if you are going to go 416 I would do the 416 rigby, there ain't no dust on it. you can load it downa nd not abuse yourself, or have plenty of case capacity to really push them out there fast.

That's what I'd do Smiler

Red, the whole reason I'm even considering a .416 is I've found a pretty great deal on a Shilen unturned blank in this caliber.

go 416 rigby then, awesome cartridge. my gunsmith passed away a bit over a year ago, before he died we were planning a 416 rigby on a 1917 remington.

I say go with a 458 Win or the 458 Lott.

Then you will have plenty of time to get used to the recoil.

Also the 458 bore is one of the best, if not the best, to load down for deer and pig shooting.
