glass bedding raised the point of impact

I recently glass bedded my previously floated Classic Mod. 70 barrel with the gel type bedding from brownell's. Please note that the action was already bedded. When I went to the range with it shortly thereafter, I found it to shoot 2 inches highter than before. My concern is since I obviously have some upward pressure caused by the bedding, should I re-bed it with the regular glass (the light weight stuff) in an effort to releave the pressue or leave it alone. By the way, it is shooting awfully well like it is.

There may not be a lot of pressure as a result of your glass bedding unless you actually planned to create it. A barrel usually shoots away (in this case up) from any hard material contact against the barrel surface. If it is shooting to your satisfaction then monitor it's performance over time . If it maintains the same point of impact from group to group and from month to month, year to year etc. then you can be reasonably sure that the stock is quite stable. If point of impact moves with changes in season or humidity then you may have to think about altering the bedding somewhat and doing a complete job of sealing the wood. You should seal all wood surfaces so they are basically impermeable to moisture. This applys to all interior wood surfaces in particular as most factory finishes do not do a good sealing job (some have no finish on the interior cuts). Several coats of diluted spar grade urethane or varnish followed by a coat or two at full consistency will usually do the trick. This also has the benefit of not allowing migration of gun oil into the wood. Some factory exterior finishes are not a particularly good moisture seal either. I think you may have a try and see situation.

The fact that it shoots higher *doesnt* mean there is upward pressure.....it only means the harmonics of the barrel has changed. If it ain't broke don't fix it. [Smile]

t.o,

If the action is on a bind, then the harmonics will have also changed. With your guard screw pulled tight, place your left hand around the barrel and forend while you loosen the front guard screw. If your barrel and action moves or it tries to climb out of the stock as you loosen the screw, then your action is in a bind and you have a bedding problem. The barrel and receiver should not move "at all" as you loosen the guard screws if the bedding is level and correct.

If you add glass to a bedded rifle then the rifle will probably settle higher in the action and barrel channal...has to, think about it, it won't all squeeze out as a rule...no big deal if it shoots then POI is nothing, just lower the POI 2" with the scope adjustments.
