Hogue aftermarket stock on Remington 700?

I have a 7mm mag Rem 700 that I pretty much love...except the stock. My problem is that when attaching and than removing my Harris bipod the point of impact changes drastically. I am wondering whether a Hogue stock with the full length aluminum bedding block would solve this issue. The swivel crew looks like it screws into the aluminum instead of the cheaper plastic of the remington factory stock. Why the Hogue instead of a H-S, etc? It's what I can afford. Also wondering whether to grind off the pressure pads at the forearm to truly free float the barrel? And experience/advice with the issues would be great. Also, this is a hunting rifle for what it's worth.

I'd try to free float it first as that is the cheapest route. I don't care for the Hogue over molded rubber stock. Just feels cheap.

I answered on your post under reloading. Definitely free float the barrel, the Rem stock is fine once that is done. Haven't used a Hogue but by many accounts they are a bit bulky and the rubberised touch is not to everyones taste. Must admit I've always been a wood stock person but recognised the lightness and durability of the plastic fantastics on my own Rem SPS and my latest, a Marlin XS7.

I have used several Hogue stocks, on Mausers, Winchesters, and Rugers, and haven't been dissappointed yet. They have solved several problems, first of which is getting the rifle ready to shoot in short order.

The more I use them, the better I like them. For your situation, I agree with the full aluminum block. I always free float the barrel. On some of my rifles, I have just inserted a thin piece of plastic, like that which a Leupold set of rings comes in. I just cut a piece out and lay it horizontal right behind wher the recoil lug goes. That has raised the barrel enough to clear the front of the barrel channel.
