Will the Ram-Line (or any other including Remington factory) 308 or 22-250 stock work for my model 788 in 222?

the 222 stock is a "short" 788, the 308 is a "long".

Here is a web page that has the Ramline stocks listed. Both are considered short actions, but the 22-250, 30-30, 223, and 222 all use a different stock than the 308,6mm, and 243.

thanx for overcoming my flash of stupidity.

Here I am using S Midsouth Shooters Supply online catalog and never think of going to Ramline web site to compare stock compatibility.

OK, 22-250 stock works for the 223 and 222 also.

65 bucks at Midsouth so I can hide the ugly factory wood stock and use a ugly plastic stock . . . Yeah that does make sense to me!
Heck a can of flat black spray paint would accomplish close to the same thing.

When I bought my 788, .222Rem, new, back in 1974, it had the worst finish I had ever seen on a stock. I refinished it before I ever fired it! The only problem was that the stock had some soft spots that turned really dark, so it looked worse after the refinish. Anyway, after almost 30 years, this butt ugly rifle still shoots one hole groups on most days, and I'm afraid to do anything else to the stock. I thought about a synthetic, but I figured if I restocked it, it might not shoot the same. Every time I take it to the range, someone always asks, "What the heck did you do to that stock, and how did you get it to shoot that good?"

Hi TC,

I have several 788's and several different stocks for them. Remington used to make Walnut stocks for the 788. Later they came out with the walnut stained birch stocks. This is what most of the stocks were made of. Richards Microfit Gunstocks makes several different wood and laminated stocks. I have had two thumbhole, and two rollover stocks from Richard's and one varmint stock from McMillian. It sure dresses up the old 788.
