I will be getting a reamer for a 458 Lott made and was after some info. What is the standard freebore for this chambering? I didnt want to get one with an extra long "Weatherby style" freebore as 80% of its shooting will be with 300gn barnes bullets and I wanted reasonable accuracy. Now I,m not after benchrest accuracy and jamming bullets into the lands ,but I didnt want more freebore than is necassary even with 500gn bullets. What is the standard?

since the lott is no longer a wildcat, your best bet is to order the "saami" version.... jeffe

Check out the link to Clymer reamers, below. It shows that their reamer has .460 freebore. Don't know how to get SAAMI info without paying. http://www.clymertool.com/cgi-bin/reamer.cgi?

jeffe, Yep, I'll bet he does have the SAAMI spec, but that does not mean the reamer is SAAMI spec. If you look he has two 416 Rem reamer designs. I think it's probably the standard 458 reamer, but I wouldn't bet soembody else's money on it! Don

I wanted to check what the SAAMI spec is. If it is .460" .this is longer than needed with the bullets I will be using. I measured some 500gn bullets I have and seated to the cannular ,I think .250 will give me enough clearance. I will be handloading and didnt want the extra freebore to get more velocity as with Weatherbies.

cr500, I bet there are lots (get it! ) of Lott reamers in Australia. Maybe ring around and ask? In Victoria, I know Pro-Cal and Kudu Services have reamers. My Lott was chambered using a "throat reamer", I bet if you asked a competent 'smith (Bob DeVries: Kudu Services!!!) there would be a cheaper way to get a "short throated" Lott then ordering a one off reamer. I'm assuming your rechambering a 458WM? If you do order a reamer, order direct from Clymer, avoid the Australian agents and save lots of $$$. Cheers... Con PS: If you do short throat your Lott, then it would be wise to have it stamped as such on the barrel.

If I could find a good reamer I might go for it. One reason I was after my own reamer is that I will ream out my factory 458 barrel ,then use the same reamer when my custom barrel gets rechambered. I will work out loads and such with the reamed out factory barrel and it should then be very similar with the same chamber in the custom barrel. Also ,there arent any Lott reamers up here in Cairns ,so a few locals might want to ream theirs out. As for being short throated ,bullets will still clear the throat with 500-550gn bullets but ,yes presures will be higher with the factory loaded ammo.(which I doubt anyone in my area will be using).I will probably get something stamped on the factory barrel as you said.

cr500, No sweat, as I said my Lott was chambered using a "458 throat reamer". I still reckon ordering what amounts to a custom reamer is pretty expensive given that 'smiths will share their reamers around. If your doing the work yourself I see where your coming from though... rechamber some guns around Cairns and try and recoup costs. But a short throated Lott is a specialty that others may not go for... I ordered a 470 Capstick reamer from Clymer and saved big time compared to going through TFBB. Reamer arrived in 7 days which was fantastic, to save costs I went halves with my 'smith. Maybe if your not doing the work yourself you could get a similiar arrangement? Cheers... Con
