I was wondering if the Model 98k M48 mauser action is one that would be good for a build project???? I am thinking a 7x57 or a 257 Bob.

That action would be fine for those rounds. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I'm not sure where you get a stock for it......many here have come up with them but they are a bit shorter than full length Mausers.....but it'll work fine for the X 57 rounds. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I don't like the M48's for building on, they are pretty roughly machined and often out of square by a lot. I had one that measured .003" off just accross the boltface. The only actions I've seen that are worse are the Charles Daly Mausers made coincidentally in the same plant. The M48a despite having sheet metal bottom metal seems to have been given more attention. You can easily replace the bottom metal. If you really want an intermediate length Yugo action then look for a Model 24 or 24/47. These were made pre-war and quality was much better. If you are looking at buying one from Mitchells, don't. You can get the same thing on the market for much less. To be sure, stock selection is limited but they can be found without too much effort. If you already have one, then yes, the cartridges you mention will be fine. Aut vincere aut mori

You could feel a little more comfortable with the higher pressure cartridges on the model 48 and 48a as well as the 24/47. The small ring German mfg mauser would be worth the time and money for the 7mm mauser and 257 Roberts. The model 48 is an intermediate action that is plenty strong but needs tweeking for the .308 type cartridges for reliable feeding. I still think I will try the .284 Winchester on this type of action and see if it gets close to the .280 Rem. for performance. ( hand loading is expected)
