Can the G.33/40 handle the 6.5x68 cartridge?
I have an old sporter. There’s no putting it back to original. Is the 6.5x68 too big for this action?

Thanks. Lee

Anything a small ring 98 with small barrel threads can handle the G33/40 will handle, assuming good heat treatment.

OAL: 3.4.
Mag box length: 3.3
So, to quantify kinda; .1 inch.
But any mag/receiver stretcher mechanic can do it. I'd probably take it out of the back. Shorten the bolt stop

So it’s it an impossible dream? Sounds good.

Not at all; very possible. Just lengthen the mag box by .1 plus some for slop. I mean clearance.

I have RWS 93 gr and 127 gr factory loads. The longest OAL is 3.233. Most are less than 3.3. I own a Christoph Funk Mauser chambered in 6.5 x 68 with a date of 3 41. The inside magazine length is 3.47 and has mods I never saw before. If you want pictures of the magazine I can post them.

I would love to see photos. I’ve wanted a 6.5x68 for years. I ordered a Manson reamer for it. If it’s not built on a G.33/40, it will be on a standard 98 Mauser or an 1917 Enfield…or both.

I see a typo in my previous post. Most are less than 3.3 should read Most are less than 3.23. Also I found my Hirtenberger factory rounds w/123 gr bullets and they measure 3.305 OAL.

I’ve never seen a magazine like that, either.

What is in the stock, just above the triggers?

Beautiful rifle, BTW.

It's a safety. Off to the left and on safe to the right.

Someone has welded in the shoulder stops into that mag; not necessary.

That is really cool. Does that type of safety have a name? Does anyone still make those?

I just got a screamin’ deal on another G.33/40 sporter. tu2

Handmade German decades ago; no one makes those that I know of.

I've heard of them referred to as stalking safeties.

The safety looks just like a Greener side safety. Much copied by German/Austrian makers. I find them awkward on shotguns, maybe because I shoot left handed.

I wonder that the focus here is on the cartridge length.
The 6,5x68 is a real high pressure cartridge.
The small ring action is not really appropriate for such cartridges.
The BRNO factory ( they made the 33/40) recommended their smallring M21 actions only for pressures of standard cartridges (Max. for the German 7x64 Brennecke).
And believe me , they really knew what they did.

Interesting point; The 33-40 is a small thread, small ring, 98. Action strength is the same as any other 98 of equal heat treatment. Might even be stronger due to the thicker ring.
Radial barrel strength of the .980 shank; is that your concern? Keep in mind that we use Chrome Moly barrel steel now; and they didn't.
OTOH, Winchester increased the shank OD for their WSMs.....Something to ponder.

No it is not the radial strength of the barrel.

The wall thickness of the front receiver ring between the lug recess and the inner C ring is the weaker part of the smallring 98 action.

For some reason I was thinking that the G.33/40 was an intermediate length Mauser.

No; the 33-40 is a standard length 98. And HK is right; the web is smaller/thinner. Does that matter? No one can definitively answer that. I say it doesn't in the 33-40 as they are made at the peak of Czech military rifle technology. Is your safety margin compromised? Isn't is always?

I love the small ring G-33-40 and the Brno mod 21 and 22 actions or rifles. I see no reason to make a blivit (10 lbs of s---t in a 5 lb. bag) out of one with a large 68 or magnum case. 7x57, 6.5x57, 8x57, anything on the 06 and ?x62 case, Just my opinion.
