Seems like every time I swear off of these, another one with potential comes my way… and well… you know what happens then. Now I remember why - It’s because they look so good cleaned up in-the-white! You can rest asured it didn't look this good when I got it! I'm only about 70% done… still lots of stoning and sanding ahead for it, but it’s a good 1937 VZ24 that will make a nice [insert caliber] for sure.

Not exactly... here's my "surface grinder" and a 1927 vz24 that isn't as far along in the process as the other one. A good flat stone will remove the crest and any pitting both above and below the wood line. It will also keep the surfaces flat and your lines straight. Use water (not oil... oil will clog the stone.) You have to keep the stone wet, flatten it periodically, go slow and work with the radius of the surface (you don’t want to create any flat spots.) The rounded edges of the stone are to get below the wood line and work up the curve of the side of the action. If I decide to scope them, then yes I would have it professionally surface ground. The results are more precise and it just makes fitting bases easier. Just cleaning them up like I've done keeps them pretty symmetrical - not "surface ground" symmetrical - but within a few thousandths. After you get the surface "close" to being done with the stone, back the stone with 220 grit paper and then 320 until you get the entire crest or any small pits removed. The results are worthwhile, but the process isn't “fast†by any stretch. Oh, and after you finish the outside... you get to do all of the inside AND all of those little edges on all the flat surfaces!!!

Yes, I'm jealous- Up until now I've been working on '09s--and one NIB Interarms Mark X--but God willing and the creek don't rise there will be a Czech Brno action somewhere in the future. flaco

The 09s are nice, but the bottom metal on them has driven the prices up to the point that they don't make much sense anymore. When they were $100/each, they were a great buy (wish I had bought a bunch!) The 09s I'm seeing now (good ones) are going for $350-$450. Plus you've got to put another $150-200 in them for the straddle floorplate, reworking the release and the trigger bow. A good vz24 (or other comparable action) can still be had in the $100 -150 range, and new blackburn bottom metal is only about $300 (and it requires no additional work.) The moral of the story is get them (either one) while the getting is good.

That is beautiful handwork, sir! Either of those would make a fantastic 9.3X62, iron sights only!

I am a long way from that level of skill, but I followed the instructions I saw on Wagner's web site and was pleased with the final product. I'd love to see some illustrations on how you stone the smaller areas. Weagle

New_guy, I hear ya on that surface grinder. I do them the same way, although on the last Turk receiver I did up, I was able to a mill file to speed up of the process a little. I still finished with stones and sand paper. If anyone needs a tutorial, here's how my friend Z taught me to do them: Crest Removal. Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

$300 is about what they sell for. New-Guy, That's a nice action! Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

You can get Blackburn's number from their web page. I think the standard bottom metal is 325 and the drop-box is 335. http://www.blackburnmachine.com/

in 1965, I bought my first Mauser. In 2000, BIG5 was selling VZ24s for $70. In 2005, Century was selling VZ24s without bolts for $50. In 2006, we are drooling over the no longer avaiable VZ24. N/G: Not being all that familiar with these old mausers. But, having two turks myself. Am I seeing and reading right, that all these ARE TURKS?? Lot's of them are available. Paid $40 for one and $60 from a local guy for the other. Both are good shooters. After reading some of the other threads, may buy a few more. Sure regret not getting another 100 or even 5 more '17 Eddystone's when they were selling for $10-25. am still shooting my first one that cost $15 when I was 15. Killed a bunch of deer and dozen elk with it. Rechambered to .300Win now and still shooting swell. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" georgeld - These are all BRNO made VZ-24s. Most of these were for the Czech military (with the lion crest), but there are a couple in there with the Romanian crest (also made by BRNO under contract for Romania.) here's the czech lion crest here's the Romanian (King Carol II) crest
