Anyone drive this recently? I'm thinking from Seattle to Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Web sites say it's open all year, but August/September are good bets.

What about inland cruises return to Seattle?

I haven't been in Anchorage since 1970, have never been on the ALCAN beyond Tok Jct. from Anchorage.

2,300 miles, 7 to 10 days . . . or twice that if you want to dawdle. I expect to dawdle.

Not recently, but I drove it in both winter and summer in the late 60's. I hear it's paved now. They do plow it and keep it open all year. In fact when it was unpaved it was better in winter.

fort nelson road report
This link will help you with up to date road conditions on the portion of the highway that's in BC. I drive the Ft. Nelson to Dawson Creek section regularly,it's in good shape, always a bit of repair in the summer. Between here and Whitehorse, has seen substantial improvements in the last 10 years, widened and paving upgrades. Again, always some touch ups in the summer.

Three years ago, I flew to Anchorage rented a motor home and dropped it off in Seattle. Get a recent Guidepost to help you plan your trip and stops. All paved, but rough in spots and you will run into road repair crews. Great trip, I went the first of Sept.

Yeah Guidepost seems to be the standard reference for this. There are some web sites.

My bud and his dad left Ft. Rich. Anchorage, driving down to Portland OR in a 1962 Plymouth Station Wagon, back in 1969. This was back in the rough road days when in Anchorage there were two types of used cars: "No Alcan" and "Alcan Driven."

We put miles on that old Plymouth station wagon until it rolled over and died on us. A great old wreck -- ugly green w/ huge fins. But reliable and we camped in it a lot.

These days I have an extended cab 2005 Ford Ranger, XLT 4WD, in excellent shape and geared up for the run.

It sounds like these days little more than a long stretch of some of the roads I use to get into the fishing holes.

we live on the Alaska Highway. Drive it all the time. It is a very good road now winter and summer. If you want to drive up then you can go back to haines alaska and take the marine ferry down to bellingham or prince rupert if you like. We just had a fellow at our house who drove from alabama and heading to Fairbanks. Had no problems. he was driving a 2011 mustang with alabama snow tires..
