NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have owned 2 different 4 wheel drive vehicles, and I have hunted out of a buddies Jeep a few times.

And I have had a buddy take his Jeep Cherokee on the same hunt I took my 1987 Nissan Pathfinder.

Here are some observations.

The Chev Blazer 4x4 was my first "hunting" vehicle.
I thought it was good, untill I got my 1987 Pathfinder, which I am still driving.

The Pathfinder has been an excellent vehicle.

It will not carry as much stuff as a Suburban, but 2 people can go on a 21 day camping elk hunt, shoot 2 elk and bring all your stuff and all the elk meat home. It will go everyplace I have taken a jeep, and carry your gear.

you just cannot carry enough stuff in a jeep.

A Blazer or larger vehicle can not go where the Pathfinder can.

The Pathfinder also is comfortable to drive on the hi way for that long trip from the house to the hunting area.

It has been a most excellent Hunting Vehicle for me.

Bought my 77 new in October 76. Still have it. I'm rebuilding the original engine right now after 395,000 miles. Swapped out the 727 auto for a 4-speed in 88. I kept breaking the dana 44 axles, so it now has a Dana 60 front and GM 14 bolt rear. I run 4.88 gears and 38" tires. TrueTrac in front and Detroit locker in the rear. Goes like stink.

Sounds like a sweet ride Doctor D!. I myself have a 77 Bronco that really needs some work. But it's tough to beat the old iron. Sometimes you just gotta trust the rust. Good luck with your project.

I've been hunting in a "Jeep" (the rag top whatevers) -- they're noisy and drafty on the ride out the highway. Then, when you get where you're going, you don't dare park in a lot to pick up supplies with $10,000 worth of firearms and gear in a vehicle anyone can access by unzipping the flaps.

Short and square wheelbase, they get tippy on terrain.

I think I've solved the problem.

What you do is tow one of these..................

Behind one of these..................

It's a 78 CJ-5 with a small block Chevy, turbo 350, Lockers front and rear, 5" of lift, 8000lb winch in front, 3500lb receiver hitch winch for the rear.

Set it up with a tow bar. I tow it behind my 2002 F-150 that is set up similarly.

You can pack a ton of gear in the truck and use the Jeep as kind of a trailer, packing more gear in it, or just set it up with all of your hunting gear so that you're ready to go in a flash when you get to camp.

I've owned the Jeep for 26 years and built it over that time period. It drove me and a buddy to Alaska and back while towing a trailer too!

If you are hunting in the same area I would suggest a good used 60 PTO HP MFWD tractor with a front end loader.
1) Wont get stuck like a 4WD truck.
2) Animals pay little attention to a tractor
3) Will not depreciate and easy to sell if desired.
4) Put in food plots if you desire
5) Lift you quarry to gut/clean with the front end loader
6) Put your quarry in the front in loader and transport to camp. easy on your back.
7) Only burn 1 gallon per hour of diesel (economical)
8) No registration or insurance required.
9) Durable!
10) Cut your own trail
11) Simple to maintain
12) transportable with 1 ton dualie and a float.

help pay for itself by charging your buddies $50.00 to pull their stump jumpers out of a mud hole. Big Grin

Hi everyone,

I've recently been looking into building the "perfect hunting" vehicle for myself.
I have decided that I need a half-ton 4x4 crew cab pick-up. I can put a topper/
small camper shell on the back to haul all my hunting dogs (who have been known
to get pretty stinky) in kennels, securely carry alot of gear & hopefully some
harvested game! I can also comfortably & safely travel from Wyoming to
all my current & ?future hunting destinations;
-Eastern Montana - Huns, Sharptails
-North Dakota- General Upland Hunting
-South Dakota-Pheasant
-Minnesota/Wisc-Ruffed Grouse
-Texas-Quail, Javelina
-New Mexico/AZ-Quail

I can also use it around here for bird & big game seasons! Also will have a
tow package for medium trailers (drift boat, 4-wheelers, small camper,..).

Options that I'm probably going to include;
-winch (removeable for front/back use?)
-upgraded suspension,tires
-skidplates
-custom bumper, grill guard & fog lights
-air compressor & power invertor
-pick-up bed "slider" (allows easy access to entire area under the topper)
-Gun vault
-Navigation System (luxury item) & Sound System (mandatory option!)
-leather heated seats (luxury item, although very practical when cold weather hunting)

I actually looked at a Ford Raptor a couple of days ago since it already has
lots of the features I want. Plus I think the name "Raptor" is appropriate for a
good hunting rig? If I end up doing the project I will post some pics along
the way. Any suggestions for upgrades, other options are certainly welcomed.
Good Hunting!
Jim

Actually I found my Mustang to be a pretty good hunting vehicle. Lower the top, load it up. Unlower the top, go camping. The ground clearance was a little limiting. But the torque and posi made up for a lot. Chains came in handy. And the lack of ground clearance just meant you had to pick your routes more carefully.

I probably had the only 'stang in history equipped with a high lift jack. Which I never had to use.

I loved the dirty looks I got from the guys in their lifted 4x4s who figured I had no business being where I was.

The ultimate hunting vehicle.

I really don't understand the infatuation people have with atv's.

You can get a sand rail frame for a few hundred bucks. Maybe the machine gun is a little excessive, but you can strap a couple of gun scabbards to the frame. If the new Porche flat four is available as a crate engine and will hook up to a Vee-dub tranny you'll have a ton of horsepower available. And if it doesn't VW engines aren't hard to find parts for. Also dune buggy or a baja bug will go 95% of the places a jeep will get to, without making you feel like you crawled out of a paint mixer when you get there.

Why aren't these more popular?

Why have this ...

when you could have this?
