The camera is a Nikon D700, the lens is the Nikon 28-300mm, my "go for a walk" camera/lens set-up in a Cotton Carrier since I like to have my hands free and no bag or accessories to carry. They were taken between 8:30 and 9:30 PM last Friday night, handheld, no tripod. The sun goes down pretty late this time of the year in these latitudes. These were shot in RAW, I then tweaked them a bit using Capture NX2 software and saved them in tiny jpeg format. As far as I know, no other camera is as good in low light as the Nikon 700 (and Nikon D3s of course with the same captor). The full size images are much crisper of course.

I had a feeling you shot them in RAW.

I have a Panisonic DMC-FZ18 and you can shoot in RAW although I've never tried it.

Any tips?

As I understand it, what is called RAW is not a single format used by all manufacturers, so you will need to have software which allows you to process "your RAW". What software do you have for this? The big advantage, from my point of view, of shooting in RAW is to be able to correct the exposure and the white balance in post-processing. You can also do a lot of contrast and color treatments of course, but then you get into a course on how to use your software package.

Here is what I do to get photos like the one below:

1) In DxO Optics Pro 6 software I open the RAW file of the image and make 7 virtual copies, each with an exposure compensation value around 1 EV different from the other, going from -3 to +3 EV values. I then have them all saved as a 16bit TIFF files.
2) I open Photomatix Pro software and import the seven images and let the software fuse them into one image, which I then tone map until I like what I see. I save that as a TIFF file.
3) I open Capture NX2 software and import the TIFF file which I save as a small JPEG file for web posting.

You get the following High Dynamic Range (HDR) image:

You can also play around and crop in different formats, such as a panorama style.

You can blow some serious time in front of a computer if you get interested in this, but it's raining today anyway. By the way, none of the houses you see in these pictures are for sale.

Thanks. The camera did come with some software to do this I believe. I'll have to play around with it.

I realize that not alot of people are going to go the trouble of doing an HDR treatment of their photos, but it does allow you to turn a ho-hum scenery photo into something interesting:

Great photos Alf. Remind us, monochromes from a digital camera or film later digitized?
