I am looking at finishing two Win 70 stocks that I've carved from blanks. I'm just curious the best finish to use. I've sanded down to 220 grit and wondering the best finish to go with from here. I've heard some people start with linseed oil right off and sand down, other people start with watered down tru oil and sand down eventually getting to straight tru oil after 2 or 3 coats, and I've heard some like to seal the wood before finish is applied. I'm going for high gloss finish so I know I have a lot of work to do before they're sent for checkering.

Sand to 320 then start with Permalyn sealer. At first, swab on as much as the wood will take. Let it dry over night. You can start wet sanding (320g) with the Permalyn sealer. Let it dry over night. Repeat the wet sanding process until you feel you have the pours sufficiently filled, then my finish of choice (lately) is Procustom Oil for a 'glossy' finish. The 'gloss' can be cut back if desired. Using a sanding sealer, such as Permalyn, will save from having to apply countless applications of oil.

I like Gun SAv R from Brownell's in the spray can. follow the directions. Good stuff. The secret is in the application not the product. Permalyn is good as are many others..I like /3 Linseed or whatever, 1/3 Watco, and 1/3 Mineral spirits with a sanded in finish to a satin eggshell luster..Lots of variables..

I've used Timberluxe finish on the last few M/70 stocks that I've finished, their website has complete instructions for its use. Well worth checking out.
