These are my feelings as well. I carry muzzle up and only put a flip up cover on the objective for the reasons you state. I hunt the wide open so plenty of time to use my thumb and flip it up.

I cut mine to fit out of old innertube flip it off and it goes out in front of the scope, sometimes I retrieve it and sometimes not, I have a lot of them..Works better than any product out there..and I can carry my gun pointed up or down as most folks do if they put miles on a trek..
