Pups are due to whelp Jan 15. Now I'm looking for a book on training pointing dogs. Any suggestions?

We'll also be getting a retriever puppy later this year.

the best books for any bird dog IMO are the Wolters books. Gun dog for the pointers and water dog or game dog for the retrievers.

You should visit www.gundogforum.com

There are many good breeders and trainers that hang out there and you'll get much better advice.
You'll also learn about various dog training clinics and trials in your region.

Congrats on your new pup.
The best advice now is to let the puppy pick you. Many people make the mistake of picking the puppy. If you let the puppy pick you, you'll get a better match and life long friend.

If your hunting dog is fat, then you aren't getting enough exercise. Smiler

I train all of my animals myself, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep that name, just in case.
As far as the breeding goes, I must admit that I am pretty much "buying the breeder" in this case. This cross is one he's made before with great results. The Breeder is Spin Top Kennels in Northern Alabama and I found so many unsolicited testimonials about this guy, that I'm comfortable enough to do the deal. On a lighter note, but not the deal maker for me, he is very reasonable on his prices. This guy is a retired football coach who raises dogs and hunts them purely for the love of it.

The bitch is out of Resa's Trouble Mace on top, and out of the Grouse line on the bottom. She's strait FDSB bred and has multiple titled dogs on both sides, and a fairly notable sire. The stud doesn't have any names or lines that I was familiar with, but still has 7 champs in the 3 gen ped. I think that this is a good, but not great pedigree, but it is good enough for me and my first pointer. Most importantly, I trust the breeder and I'm sure he'll be around for any questions, or problems, that I might have. I've been in the horse business for fifteen years or so, and never have heard of a guarantee going with a colt (even a very high dollar one), no matter how well bred, or proven the cross is, so I'm a bit leery of the puppy guarantees I see.

I do have the Water Dog and Game Dog and like them a good bit. Gun Dog will be arriving soon, I was just wondering if there was a book out there that is to the Pointing dogs like Water Dog is to the retrievers. Thanks again guys, and Merry Christmas.

Buy the book (Wing and Shot) by Robert Wehle. Considered the bible for beginning bird hunters and trainers.

Butch,
There'll still be a retriever, breed yet to be determined, in our near future. My wife and I had a deal. We had one dog and one cat. Now my dog has died, and we somehow have three cats. I see more puppies in my future. Big Grin I need to strike a one gun per knick knack collectible BS that I totally don't understand arrangement. Wink

Griz,
I hope this puppy is an awesome dog. You know my streak of having one good one and then one less than desired one. After Ozzy the cowardly, one nut, allergic to everything, took six-months-to-house-train German Shepherd, I figure I'm in for a great one. jumping
Also just found out that Sherburne is supposed to have the best woodcock population in the state. I foresee some humbling shooting next winter. At least for me, we can't all be Olympic caliber like you.

I don't know about letting him in my lap, but I have no problem with sharing the foot of the bed. In all honesty though, I hope this puppy really takes to my son and vice versa. Right now my boy seems to be more of a cat person and nothing would please me more than to get the puppy out of his bed every morning for potty time.

I bet you're gonna love that dog! I went the same way, nice dog out of a good line. Not a national champ but an excellent hunter and a member of the family.

I have three English setters and they are my furry kids.I had a litter of puppies last year.I hated to get rid of them.I hunt grouse in alaska with them.I usually cook for them and they get lots of smoked bones ,liver and inside goodies to eat plus lots of salmon. They are my best friends through thick and thin.In Nevada they awake me in a fire and saved my life. They have aleted me of many bears and I pay them back.a black bear almost ate one of them this year and i got the bear and protected my dog. They will be your best friends for their lives you will never regret it.
