My 15 month old black Lab has just been to the vets because we found her having a fit.
Lots of bloods taken to rule stuff out, but the early call is probable epilepsy. The vet said it's not uncommon in retrievers, and can be managed by daily meds.
Has anyone got any experience with canine epilepsy? She is starting to show promise with this winter's pheasants, or at least a lot of enthusiasm. She also bailed up a pig! (NB different seasons down under!)

I too had a Chocolate lab about 18 yrs ago, that at the age of 2, was diagnosed with the same condition (epilepsy). I had spent loads of money and time having him field trained, but never took him hunting after that, as I was always afraid he would have another seizure when he was in the water, etc. Meds did seem to help the condition. Good Luck!

I'm using Potassium bromide and gavispentin (which is also a pain killer for his arthritis). I'm trying not to move up to phenobarbital.

I'm not sure Cody's is epilepsy, it was late onset - he must have been 9 when he had his first seizure - but the treatment is the same.

Like Aaron's dog, he stays out of the water - but I have other dogs for that.

I guess I would just hunt them and if they died hunting so be. They would die happy.

But then I tend to view my dogs as working dogs if they can't preform as needed. I am not going to keep them around.

Preformance can mean many things watch dog, companion ect.

You might think that as cold hearted but to feed, vet and put up with a non preforming dog for 10 to 15 years doesn't make much sense to me.

I always told my children don't get to attach to the dogs you might have to eat them some day.

My 6 yr old Lab, Boo has it. He's also on Pot. Brom. He's had fits since he was a pup. We just message him and talk to him and make sure he's not biting his tongue. Course had the crap bitten out of me when I couldn't find anything to put in his mouth. Just live w/ it and make sure gets his regular check ups. No big thing now. I just worry about when I'm not around, but what can u do. He's one of the happiest dogs I've had. That's why we call him Boo. lol
