Vet question re stool

My lousy vet chain is closed today....I was hoping a vet on here could help(although I'm sure she'd be fine til tomorrow). My 7mo GWPF has been having diarrhea for a week, yesterday I noticed some blood in it. She's has not been acting the least bit sick. I suspect it's from drinking the water in my pool prior to my opening it yesterday.

Can I empirically start her on worm meds and which one? Or do I definitely need a stool culture first?

She could have colitis but get her checked with te vt bfore gving her any

This is only general information and not intended to be a diagnosis or treatment plan (and all that other legal crap that lawyers force us to say):

It could be hookworms, colitis, antibiotic responsive enteritis (used to be called bacterial overgrowth), parvo (unlikely since she is not acting sick), giardia, coccidia or about 50 other things. You won't hurt anything by giving a wormer with pyrantel (to treat hookworms and roundworms) that you can buy over the counter at pet stores and feed stores. Make sure you follow the directions on the package. Seeing your vet may help you get resolution faster by having a specific diagnosis and treatment plan and possibly more effective prescription strength drugs.

Thank you.....got her to the vet yesterday....no stool exam....but started her on Flagyl and dewormer, also put her on a canned bland diet for 3 days. Less than 24 hours and her stool this morning was solid, no diarrhea whatsoever.

I have been feeding her the Iams large breed puppy food....should I switch? She's 47lbs and 7 months old.

She's big enough and old enough to put on adlult food. Just remember any time you change a dog's diet you can get vomiting or diarrhea. Change it gradually over several days.
