For 14 years Hershey was by my side. Always happy even when I wasn't. I know the world is not going to end but, it sure feels like today!! What counts is what you learn after you know it all!!!

I am so sorry Dulcinea...My dog is only a year old and I dread the day I have to post something similar. Drink a good dark German beer with some hunting friends tonight and say a toast to absent companions.

Sorry for the lose of your good friend I had a Hershey also long time back & he was a far better dog than I deserved. A good friend needs to be remembered for all the laughter & pleasure they gave whit nothing held back.

My condolences too, Dulcinea. No, the world will not end, but it will be a different and sadder place. Still, wait a period of time, and then, when it is time, and you will know when, get another dog. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

I lost Elroy earlier this year. He is next to Queenie on the dresser. I still mourn for both of them. Bella,my 4 yr. old Border Collie, is being spoiled rotten. I can't imagine being without a dog. My sympathy to you. Be thankful for the time you had with him and always believe you'll see him again one day. Nick10Ring

My hunting buddy from many years, did not cry at divorce. He lost it when his black lab of 15 years died. I used to say, that dog speaks English and is better behaved than most people. She lived to hunt, retrieve, and please people. We miss her. She was a better lady than most of the women I have known and been married to. My sympathy and prayers are with you. I lost my Elroy earlier this year. The only really comfort was the fact I had Bella,my 4yr.old Border Collie. Elroy was a one in a million dog. Be happy with the good memories you had of the times with him. Nick10Ring

It's never easy when we lose our hunting partners. I'm facing the same situation sooner than I'd like to think. My black lab, Cody, is 12 1/2 and she's fading quite a bit. I'm hoping she'll be able to make it through one last duck season with me this fall. Yesterday, I went out to the desert, scouting for pronghorns, and I took her with me for the all day ride. My excuse was the weather was really hot at home, but the truth is I wanted her to be with me all day. She rode in the back seat of my crew cab pickup with the A/C blasting and we put nearly 400 miles on my pickup. I know she enjoyed the food, and I enjoyed her company. There won't be that many more hunts together, so I'm trying to have her out in the field with me every chance I get.

A tear comes to my eye as I think of good dogs I've lost and the best one that I've ever had, lying at my feet as I type this, who is starting to show her years. A good dog can make such an impact in your life. They're family. Givers of unconditional love. I feel for your loss, I've been there, I dread being there again. Will J. Parks, III

Well said. Both of my hunting/house dogs are in their early teens. Both still have the heart, just not the legs. We are fortunate to have such loving companions in this world, even if they don't stay as long as we'd like. Tom Addleman tom@dirtnapgear.com

Sorry for your loss. The best dog I ever had was a terrier mix mutt that I named Chobe. She was only around for 8 yrs but what a great addition to our family. So good with the kids and a great hunting companion. She never would stray in the field always walking right next to you. You stop,she stopped. You sit, she would sit. Eager to walk, just a great dog. I start to feel sad just thinking about her. I miss her a lot. The new dog we have is a distant cousin of Chobe. Baffi is very much like Chobe, a little smaller and a lot faster but not quite the same. Paul

I lost my best friend last Friday. The wife and my big Lab, Angie and a smaller lab mix were headed from E. Texas over to our other house in W.Monroe, La. We stopped at Ruston to pick up some fresh peaches and spotted a barbecue place and went back for lunch. I picked that weekend for the trip because it was very cool for this time of year. I parked in some shade and was going to open camper top so it would not heat up( I have a inverter and 12"fan to cool or heat dogs as case may be, truck is lined with bedrug liner for them so they travel comfortable and well) When I opened the back the first thing I saw was Angie, motionless. She was 12 1/2 and had been going down fairly fast but still liked to take our 3 mile early morning walks, and was anxious to load up that morning to go see my son. I don't think I have had anything hurt me, or my wife as bad and hard as the death of her. We had her cremated and brougt her home with us. JJK

In my real life I am a K-9 handler. I am closer to my dog than most people I know and the bond is unbreakable. We have had some rough times with his health but have come through side by side and he would gladly give his life for me without hesitation. He is almost 8yrs old now and has been with me since he was 10wks old. Thats longer than most marriages! A famous man once said he didnt know if dogs went to heaven or not but that when he died he wanted to go wherever they went. SO true.

Sorry to hear about your loss - I'm sure he'll be waiting at the bridge for you. Here's a poem I've always loved - it's helped ease the passing of a few furry companions: God promised at the birth of time, A special friend to give, His time on earth is short, he said, So love him while he lives. It may be six or seven years, Or twelve or then sixteen, But will you, till I call him back, Take care of him for me? A wagging tail and cold wet nose, And silken velvet ears, A heart as big as all outdoors, To love you through the years. His puppy ways will gladden you, And antics bring a smile, As guardian or friend he will, Be loyal all the while. He’ll bring his charms to grace your life, And though his stay be brief, When he’s gone the memories, Are solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, Since all from earth return, But lessons only a dog can teach, I want you each to learn. Whatever love you give to him, Returns in triple measure, Follow his lead and gain a life, Brim full of simple pleasure. Enjoy each day as it comes, Allow your heart to guide, Be loyal and steadfast in love, As the dog there by your side. Now will you give him all your love, Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come to call, To take him back again? I fancy each of us would say, “Dear Lord, thy will be done, For all the joy this dog shall bring, The risk of grief we’ll run.” “We’ll shelter him with tenderness, We’ll love him while we may, And for the happiness we’ve known, Forever grateful stay.” “But shall the angels call for him, Much sooner than we’ve planned, We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes, And try to understand.” …..
