Ran on this on the net....from wilki

quote:
n 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. Ueno would commute daily to work, and Hachikō would leave the house to greet him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued the daily routine until May 1925, when Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, while he was giving a lecture, and died without ever returning to the train station in which Hachikō would wait.

Each day, for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachikō awaited Ueno's return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.

Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly. However, after the first appearance of the article about him on October 4, 1932 in Asahi Shimbun, people started to bring Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.[5]

A movie was made about this dog. It's certainly worth seeing. Sometimes it's available on Netflix.

Be warned: it's a tear jerker for any dog lover.

That is a very good movie. There are excerpts available on YouTube. The original Hachiko story is very interesting as well. I looked into getting an Akita when my last dog died but I stayed clear!

A couple of years back, I was gassing up off an interstate, station was fairly busy, and a Japanese couple pulled up at pump over from me. The pretty and smaller lady opened rear door and a GIANT Akita bailed out, wagging tail. I stayed real still. She aired him out on grassy area, and told him to get back in car and sit, leaving door open....he did, and she walked inside for a drink, or whatever, that Dog closely watched her every step with clear intent. If someone had grabbed her, he would have been prime steak in a heartbeat. Really impressive animal.

Gad. This dog worshipper would be a blubbering mess.

Dog Wanted:

I suppose this is as good a place to put this as any. My wife and I lost, due to cancer, our beloved mini-Schnauzer earlier this year. It was, to say the least, an extremely painful/sad time for us.

Over this summer, my son's bird dog, a great dog was staying in house with us. Damn, now Son took him to Colorado with him and I'm missing dog like crazy. This is a Wachtelhund we purchased from a fellow ARer.

Anyone know of a good relative small bird dog pup, such as a Brittany, or Airedale, or Schnauzer available in Texas or we might be able to pick up. I am not fond of sending them by air.

My heavy walking, exercise hunting days are about over, so I am leaning towards a home guard type dog.
