I have two new Brittany pups. I am looking for recommendations and information on the best electronic dog collar. I want the ability to know when the dog goes on point as well as the "shock" control to manage their behavior. All thoughts and ideas are welcome.I have never used electronic collars so this is a new experience. Thanks, Strapman

I train a retriever for field trials, hunt test and hunting and train w/ numerous pros in the business. I've used several Tri-tronics collars and like them very much. They have excellent customer service AND are American made. Check out their website.

I will second Tri-tronics and use one on my Britt. It depends on where you hunt but if it is in heavy cover where you cannot see the dog the beeper can be added. I like to have maintained and instantaneous shock control and have an old pro 500 model. Range is one mile.

If I were buying one today I would save some money and buy the 1/2 mile version. You will have extra cost as you have 2 dogs. You only need one control but 2 sets of collars.

I buy from www.collarclinic.com website has lots of info also.

I'll third on Tri-Tronics. They are not much more than the others, but are American made. Remember, you don't teach with a collar, only correct the dog if it willfully disobeys. The Pro 100 is my favorite training collar.

I'll 4th the tri-tronics.

I have the Tri-Tronics Upland Special 2 dog set. It has a tougle switch for 2 collar control that you gotta be careful which dog is on.

I have the beeper units for the collars also, but the beepers are not good for pups. The loud beeper scares them, and can ruin your dog or confuse him big time. Not good at all.

I would be very carful with that beeper locator unit. I dont like it and wont use it on my dogs. Id just keep that in mind about the beeper.

I use small bells on my dogs collars if i need to know where they are at while hunting

And good advice above, The shock collar should not be used to train your dog when first learning commands. The shock collar should only be used after the dog has been trained and "knows" his commands and if he trys to ignore you or not obay a command he already knows, or to get his attention

Be carefull with that shock collar. If misused you can ruin your dog

I'll fifth the tri-tronics collars. They are the 800 lb. gorilla of the shock collars.
I also think that if you've never used a collar on a dog before, that you should watch an experienced handler for a while, or get some help. You can ruin a dog in short order if you don't know what you are doing.

As already said here, it is recommendable to learn from people who know, attend a seminar on dog trainig if possible and get some literature.

A training collar is a big help to support your training but by no means a magic wand, it can even be destructive if not used properly.
