I have watched this a couple of times and am amazed by how much game in Scandanavia is hunted with dogs. I wish we could do something similar in America. Anyone have an American source for Scandanavian Elk hounds like used in the video?

What would you expect to hunt with your Elkhound in the US? There are many Euro-breeds that are used on a variety of game from Sweden to the Balkans. The idea of a "versatile" dog used for everything from retrieving ducks to driving and baying being game has been around in Europe for 130 years. I have been on hunts in Germany where DD, German Jagdterriers, Wachtel, etc have been used to drive hogs, fallow deer, etc. DD and Jagdterrier are used to control predators, hunt small game as well. The Wachtel is wonderful blood tracker as are many of the versatile breeds. By all means, pursue the Elkhound if it interests you....but the versatility of the breed is not unique....although its probably unknown to most in this country.

Aren't Weimaraner's used for big game in Germany as well? By the way, how are the DD use to hunt deer? do they go on point for the shooter or do they chase them toward a group of hunter/shooters? Thanks for responding.

It is my understanding that elk hounds are only used to hunt elk and caper. They use trever hounds to hunt everything else. Germans use all the German gun dogs to hunt all game and blood trail game. Even the little dachshund terrier. While in most of the United States it would be illegal to hunt big game with a dog, you could use them for blood trailing, and birds.
