Last Saturday, we had to euthanize our dog Jett. He had Cushing's Syndrome for a short while but also had cancer in his adrenal, prostate glands and colon.

He was not one the sporting varieties popular on this board but was our child for 13.5 years. No better companion could have been had. Needless to say, we are heartbroken.

Sorry to hear that Fla! When I saw your name I remembered your thread on Cushings and put two and two together. Dogs do not have to be sporting breeds to be a good companion on life's journey.

Those of us who love dogs come to understand that the real price we pay for their love and companionship is their passing.

Enjoy the memories.

Sorry for your loss. It will be over 2 years ago that I lost Elroy and I still grieve for him. Dogs are unique and I don't think I can ever be without one. That's why my Bella is spoiled rotten. She's my best friend.

I am sorry for your loss! I myself have gone through the ordeal more times than I care to remember. However, the silver lining to get back on the right track, is to go out and get your selves another puppy. It has worked for me everytime! Memories will still put a smile on your face and that new puppy will make you both chuckle again you betcha.

Forrest, sorry to hear about Jett. I remember back when you would bring him up here to get in some running free time. He really liked it and you hated having to groom him afterward, to get all the stuff out of his long hair.

He had a long and comfortable live with you and Carmine.

So sorry to hear about your loss. All "dog people" have to go through that. Remember - nothing takes away the pain of losing a good dog, but a puppy helps.

The picture of you sitting on your sofa with your friend in your arms tears my heart out. In it I see both what life is supposed to be among soul-mates, and a mirror reflection of what me and my constant, loving, loyal and faithful companion were to each other until yesterday.

I had to put down my best friend yesterday. Lymphoma, which had progressed a great deal. A previous vet shop had mis-diagnosed him as having asthma, so he got no appropriate treatment until it was far too late.

Your picture, with you both calm and secure in each other's presence tells me all I need to know. You and he are a MAN and his FRIEND one could be proud to ride the trail with.

Nothing will ever replace the unique personality & unquestioning faith and devotion of which you are bereaved. But, your love and memories will keep him secure in the great cosmos of things. And he will be happy for you if you make another canine friend in the future (or even a feline one). He will accept that his new assistant is helping in his life's work of keeping you happy and safe, as though he had planned it himself.

My very, very, best thoughts for you.

You and your wife both hang in there.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Gentlemen, Sorry to hear of your losses. I hope this helps.

He is Just My Dog
He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds.
My other ears that can hear above the wind.
He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea.
He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being.
By the way he rests against my leg.
By the way he thumps his tail at my slightest smile.
By the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another man.
With him, I am all-powerful.
He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
He is loyalty itself.
With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding, where before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me... Whenever...wherever.
In case I need him. And I expect I will – as I always have.
He is my dog.

Forrest, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I don't come to this forum often because my dog isn't a hunting companion, he's just a great friend and family member. He's a Boxer named Boomer.

Today I'm going to have to take my friend to the vet for the same purpose. He's only 8 1/2 years old but has developed some sort of legions on his spinal cord. Fortunately he's not in any pain but as of Friday He can no longer walk without falling down. His front legs work OK but his back ones are no longer functional.

As I write this I have a tear in my eye and a lump in my thoat. It's an amazing thing that God would put such a creature on this earth able to give so much unconditional love and ask for so little in return. I know what you've been going through and I hope your grief passes soon.

Take care,
Terry

Terry, sorry to hear about your boxer. My mother bred boxers when I was a kid, I always wanted to keep all the litters, we did get 2 for pets, real sweet dogs.

Having my dog euthanized was the toughest thing I have ever done, still think about him alot.

Yeah, we took care of it yesterday afternoon. My wife and I both walked out of office like sobbing children. It still hurts but I know it was for the best. These animals will leave a mark on your soul, I'm sure you feel it too.

My boy just left for his 1st year of college last week and it sure seems quiet in this house this morning with both him and the dog not here.
