Friends-

I have a six month old lab puppy and he has some really funky gas. I took him to the vet about a month ago for his last round of puppy shots. At the time he had a loose stool but, not much gas. The vet gave me another dose of wormer and suggested I put him on Science Diet Large Breed puppy food.

Worked like a champ, his stool harded up but, now he'll run you out of the room if he farts.

The vet also said to try him on some yogurt which I did but now he's like sitting next to a sewer.

Any suggestions??

I have heard from several people that "Beano" the stuff made for humans works well. I don't use it though since my own have always smelled ok to me! Big Grin

When I had this problem with a dog we changed to a food with different primary ingredients and that helped. He could be reacting to a grain or protein source in the food.

I have a 4 month old Deutsche Wachtelhund who had the same problem. Loose stool and not feling very well. The Doc put her on some pills and about 2 weeks after finishing the pills .. same thing. When I took her in last week for her last round of shots he said it might be that she has gas and to give her Tums, especially the fruity kind and use them like a treat. Start out on two per day and then back off to one a day. I guess the Tums is to help with the gas problems. You might want to try it.

Try some Lactinex tablest. It is lactobacillus acidophillus culture. Sometimes Alolph's meat tenderizer(unsalted) helps.
You might change the food and get onto one of the "natural" brands. Mars Inc is making one but I can't remember the name right now. There is one called "Natures Recipe" that has worked for my clients in the past. I also had success with giving a spoonful of mixed vegetables in the food daily.

Well after 20+ years of Boxer's that are the biggest Gas Bags on earth.. I found this routine works very well..

1. feed them their dog food only, strict diet control is the key. No people food or snacks..

2. NO CANNED FOOD!

3. I've found Avo Derm Lamb & Brown Rice works best, slightly moistened yours might vary..

4. A table spoon of plain yogurt on top of the food but not mixed in..

Good luck

Update-

Sunday, I went to Pet's Mart and bought a bag of Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy food.

He loves the food, however,

Good news: No gas!!!

Bad news: Loose stool.

I guess I will continue to watch and see if his stool will harden up with some adjustment time to this food.

I had similar problem with my WPG. If what you're doing doesn't work for you, try Purina Pro Plan Lamb & Rice... no gas and you won't have to squeegee your lawn. Big Grin

Dr. Duc is right on. Look for a natural food not by-products as the first ingredient.

Friends-

Thanks for all of the guidance and suggestions.

The pup's system got acclimated to the Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy food and he more normal than he ever was. No gas and no squirts, just a normal 7 month old puppy.

Right on. Smiler Nice to see good news.

I didn't speak up earlier, as I had nothing constructive to add! My lab is 13yo, and I've tried just about every kind of food made. Never found a single one that wouldn't cause him to have room clearing farts. We continue to endure!

Our 11yo lab is the opposite. He can eat anything and still have firm stool, and rarely ever has gas.

Cheers,
Canuck
