Heelers are damn smart dogs. Sometimes they are to smart for their own good.

He's a cute one, ain't he? Probably great with kids. Jack Russels are my favorite kind of dog. I could play Fetch with one all day...

My brudder 'tinks da same 'ting. But we have a member (wetdog) who says Heelers are good trainin' dogs. I don't know. Back in the late 1970s, I knew a man who had his German Shepherd trained so well he could put a raw steak on the dog's head and tell him to just stay and do nothing until the dog was told to eat the steak. That dog would drool and shake and whimper-- but just sit there, looking at that steak on his head-- until he was told he could eat it. It was Katy bar the door after that...

I've known and loved quite a few blue heelers and they are indeed highly intelligent, often more so than is good. They also have the highest bite rate of any dog. Mostly just nips, but I've been bitten/nipped by several in my day. Not a good dog for a first time owner. Wonderful companion for someone who has the sort of job that allows them to take their dog along all day, like a horse shoer.

I grew up with them on the family ranch. All the heelers on the ranch were working dogs. They can be hard headed and tend to be a one man dog but all that I have been around loved kids. Heelers get quite protective of stuff that they consider theirs such as pickups my heeler wouldn't let anyone near it's truck.
