My Rhodesian Ridgeback mix got into it with a skunk yesterday....the dog was the winner, sort of. I used 1 quart of drugstore hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and a tablespoon of liquid soap mixed in, rubbed in well, rinse and then regular soap. The result was good, the dog was welcomed back into the house after drying in the sun a few hours. I can still smell it a bit when I sniff his head but he is not too bad!

Heh, we just went through this same scenario on Monday morning with our Aussie. Used the identical solution. Took two rounds of the HP followed each time by a couple of soap shampoos, but our girl is mostly odor free. I have been told the scent may come back with a change in humidity or precipitation.

...my sympathy. Our dog has been acting very depressed since this happened. Our other dog died a couple of weeks ago, he was depressed after that but had been feeling more like his old self until the skunk episode. We started spelling the word "skunk" because he seemed to recognise what we are talking about! [he's a smart cookie all right]

Crf, you need to get your dog a companion pup, so he'll have a friend to raise up and "show the ropes" to.

...we may do that. Our other dog that died was a great help in civilizing Sarge, he was a real wild man when we took him in.

After the skunk attack we noticed his lips, nose and muzzle were pink and raw looking. I thought it was from him rubbing his face in the dry rough grass. I did some research and learned that the skunk spray can cause inflammation from an allergic reaction. An online vet recommended Benedryl, 2 caps for a 50 lb dog twice a day. Last night I gave him some and this morning he seemed to have a better outlook. Appetite still good, I think he'll be feeling better soon.

My old Springer got sprayed by a skunk when I was at the local high school one night walking the track for exercise. I through him in the new Tahoe and headed home. I used the same recipe that CRF used and it worked OK. But the darn Tahoe smelled horrible.

I've been useing a product called Skunk-Off for a few years. It works slightly better than the home brew remedy. I keep it stocked on our srvice trucks and in my dog box at all times.

According to some Dog groomers I am acquainted with, Massengil Douche is supposedly the best remedy.

If I had to clean the dog, the dog would smell like a skunk till it wore off!

CRF, can we have an update on how your dog is doing now? He back to normal yet both physically and mentally?

Benedryl is a common allergy medication for humans and can be given to dogs and cats.

Mark asked above for an update on Sarge the Skunk killer. His depression lifted after several days. The red rawness of his lips and muzzle [looked similar to a chemical burn] has nearly healed but it has taken a while. His lips are naturally dark-liver in color and the flesh healed slowly, then the pigmentation gradually came back. There is still a tiny pink area on each mouth corner.

We had a bit of rain and when damp he still smelled very faintly of skunk but I really had to sniff to detect it.

It was a lot harder to deodorize his leather collar. I first soaked it in the same HP and Baking soda solution, then later in Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner, then a soak in white vinegar. Between each treatment it was dried in the sun a couple days. After all this it was decent smelling but dry and stiff as cardboard. Obenhoffs boot oil restored the leather.
