In the spring I was asked if I would take a pup. Turned out to be a six month old Weimer. I knew a fellow that had a couple over 40 years ago and always liked the look of these dogs. While I have had a black lab and a cocker for hunting dogs before this is my first go round with a pointing dog. So far it looks very promising. The dog, now just 11 months old is pointing huns and pheasants. These are wild birds not pen raised. She also shows a real determination on blind retrieves and is not easy to call off until she finds the dummy. I do not expect the classic point but do see it on an increasing basis. I'll be satisfied with points and retrieves, and do not demand steadiness to flush or shot. So far she hunts close which is what these 60plus year legs require. SHe does well quartering in front and is easy to keep within gun range. I suppose this may change when she gets a taste of blood on those flappy gums. Does anyone else on the board use Weimers for hunting?

Great dogs....a little hard-headed, but VERY trainable if you know how to train a dog. Ours gave beautiful "classic points". Held well, and retrieved wonderfully although our stud dog was a little "hard-mouthed". We wanted our dogs to work close and they did. That was perfect for us. Dad and I hunted on foot. It was a liability however when competing on horseback against the German Shorthairs.

Hi, Don: What you say about hunting close is what I want in a dog. I will not be on horseback, nor competing. One of the best dogs I have seen work for its master was a young Braque Francais. Stayed within reasonable distance and was obviously hunting for its owner. Here on the open prairies I have seen many English Pointers that ranged way out there and busted flock after flock of hungarians. Yeah they found them but either busted the birds at several times shooting distance or had the birds run off while they showed lots of style.

Murf.... Best of luck with that pup..!! Weimaraners are great multi-purpose dogs. Our stud dog was a conformation champion..USA and Canada, including some Best In Show wins. He was UDX obedience, certified tracking, a GREAT water dog, and reasonably competitive in field trials. He "did it all" for us, and with us. Slept with me in the house, and travelled everywhere we went. Hope your new pup meets and exceeds all your expectations just as well. BTW: Stormy has been gone for a long time now...Dad too for that matter. Thanks for bringing those earlier days back to me. Best Wishes... Don

Thanks for the encouragement Karl and Don. The wee gal has already caught a pheasant for me if a chick still in down durring Sep't counts. Nice soft mouth and was able to return it where it was found. She had previously made a great point on the hen and I would have never thought there would be young days old chicks at this late in the year. Going to try for ducks tomorrow or the next day as upland does not open until the week end.

I just got a Weim pup. She goes everywhere with me. I don't know anything about training dogs, so we're both learning slowly. I've always liked the looks of them and always wanted a dog that go anywhere I wanted to go, she loves riding in the truck. Congrats on yours and hopefully my 13week pup will be able to teach me a thing or two. ![]() *we band of 45-70ers* USAF AMMO Retired!

Good for you Ammohouse. My dog had to be renamed Shadoe. Her original name was Copper but she is the classic grey colour , much like a mule deer doe, plus the fact she shadows me around the house and yard led to the name change. She does swim but when I got a teal a week ago she turned up her nose at it. She refused to pick it up even after I threw it. Seems to think she is an upland specialist. On Monday she got a sharptail for me and tonight,Tuesday, she retrieved six huns. Of the six 3 would likely have been lost without her. Nice soft mouth as none of the birds had broken skin and I had to dispatch a couple after I got them. Only problem is she is still at the puppy stage and doesn't want to give up the birds. Oh well, cajolling her for a few minutes is better than spending 20 minutes looking for a bird in waist high grass.I am hoping she will see the light of day and bring the birds back once she finds out I can be stubborn as she is. In fact I never saw one of the birds drop. It must have been at the edge of the covey rise and got a stray pellet. I had marked the one I was shooting at and called her to search for it. After she refused to leave the area. I went to see what she was looking for but couldn't spot it. Leaving her I walked back to the truck, a hundred yards or so, took a couple pictures of the 4 birds I had then. When I turned around she was behind me with the unknown bird. Of course once I showed interest in it she went through her little game of trying to get me to chase her. SHe developed this game at the off leash dog park. SHe loves to have other dogs chase her and will taunt them with her training dummy.

I took Abby out for a little walk through the neighbors field yesterday. She started running around and acting "birdy". Then all of a sudden she went on point!!! It was the classic point too! Back all straight, leg up, her nub tail sticking straight up...it was the coolest thing! Of course I didn't have my camera. I searched around and didn't find a bird, must have just been the smell of one. Then 10 seconds later she goes back to eating horse crap and acting like a puppy again. It was still pretty cool to me, I'm happy. I'm going to go look for training books today, I already know she's smarter than me...I gotta catch up! ![]() *we band of 45-70ers* USAF AMMO Retired!

I was out for huns again today. Shadoe had 4 nice retrieves and is learning that the bird should be brought to me. Far less screwing around than last week. My nephew and I got shots at 5 coveys and the dog was steady to wing and shot on each rise. Do you think the fact her birthday was yesterday had anything to do with the progress? ![]() ![]() ![]() Tomorrow my son and nephew will both be going and we plan to hit my usual hunting areas.I will likely spend more time working the dog and let them take most of the shooting. I am really looking forward to it. With decent weather conditions I hope to work 25 or so coveys, so the dog will have her work cut out for her.

Sounds like she is working out pretty good. A little off topic, how does she work in the cold? I see you're in Canada and was wondering how the dog handles it. Or did you just buy a jacket for her to wear? *we band of 45-70ers* USAF AMMO Retired!

SHe is only a year old this week so she has not seen the cold. The breeder tells me her weims will run for hours behind the snow mobiles. If a dog keeps moving they can keep up their core temperature but I am wondering about the extremities esp ears.

I adopted a 2 year old male Wiemeraner in 2000. "Thunder was a handful since, I guess, he was abused. I took a year to change him into a loving, friendly dog> I live in AZ and with the cacti all over, the last thing I wanted to do was carry a 85lb dog back a mile when he got into the "Jumpin' chollas" he had never been hunting with his first owner I was told. At the age of seven, I took him with me up to help at a youth pheasant hunt for the top students of the AZ hunter Education classes. It took place in janurary at the Mile High hunt club in Mayer AZ. The brittany that was working with my group og kids would not retreive a wounded, running Pheasant ( we shot both hens and rootsers since they were all planted birds) so I asked if it was ok to bring out my dog and see if he would get it. long story short ...he did. he also pointed and retreived all morning. he would not honor another dogs point though. What the hell he never hunted before...noone told him the rules. I was still a "Proud Papa" This is his first hunt: ![]() That was two years ago and we still get our one hunt per year. I am now well into my first winter with the dog. She did well in the fall and now hunting is over but we still need exercise. Today it was -40 with the windchill and she still insisted on her outing. About an hour, I make perhaps a mile and a half while she has to put on 6 or 7. In the real cold I do put on a sweater and a nylon coat to act as a wind breaker. For milder days of -20 she does okay on her own.
