I will be going overseas soon for 4 months and my dog will be looked after by a friend while Im away. She is a year old and is a superb retriever. Will she recognise me when I return?

you betcha. Her retrieving skills may need a bit of brushing up, but if you've put in the time with her and bonded she'll even talk to you on the phone.

No problem I've been gone as long as 8 weeks at a time when I was driving OTR and my dogs recognized me before my wife did.

Leave her one of your old shirts, after you've worn it . . . Then she has your scent and knows you'll be back. Be sure to spend some time talking to her and telling her you're going to be gone, but will return. Then give her the shirt (pants, towel, whatever).

Dogs understand better than we might imagine.

My brothers Lab stays with us when he occasionaly travels. We may not see her for several months but she recognises my wife and I as well as our dog. All my brother has to say to her is "Let's go see uncle Walt." and the dog goes hyper.

Dog goes hyper --

Neighbor's Lab, "Brig" (Brigadier General) trained for ducks. I walked into the den to show off my trap gun, opened the action and Brig comes bounding down the hall! Heard the action and figured it's time to get in the truck! We're going after the ducks!

For a short time in college, I lived with my sister and brother-in-law and their reservation rescue lab mix (Dakota). He is afraid of most men.

It was almost 2 years before I came back to visit and it was like I had only been gone for a day. He definitely remembered me. I even woke up with him in my bed that night.

Don't know if the OP is gonna see this, but I liked it. Made me tear up a bit, I mean, it would have, you know, if I was soft.

The bond between a man and his dog is a powerful thing.
It's a good thing that I am man enough to keep my emotions under control Wink
Thanks for sharing.
