Anybody? I have a new Rottweiler pup that came from a Rescue and she's likely poorly bred with perhaps a greater of chance hip issues etc. Any thoughts on insurance?

I had insurance for a couple years on 3 hunting Labs, hunting dogs generally get injured so I figured insurance was the way to go, for the first 2 or 3 years we may have broke even, then the following year we had a problem with a claim which resulted in my termination of the insurance. The problem was one of my dogs had a claim for problem X, within the next 6months the problem X reoccurred. They disallowed the 2nd claim do to a 6 month limit on the same type of claim. Now the first time the vet recommended the minimum level of surgery which didn't work resulting in the major vet bill 4 months latter which was disallowed. The other problem Insurance companies are great on nit picking the items on a vet bill so you really never know what will be covered and what will not plus they have deductibles limits and clauses that would make a new jersey lawyer go back to school

My recommendations do what you think is right, In the 3 years or so that I have been uninsured I have had minimal vet bills so by my calculations I am very much ahead.

My wife purchased insurance coverage on our 2 dogs and 2 cats. She 1st asked my advice on the idea, and I told her it was all a scam/bullshit/ripoff/fraud. She said it was through the Humane Society. I said it was still a waste of money. She bought it @ 100.00 a month. Two weeks later, 1 of our cats disappeared for 2 days, then returned with a severely damaged face.
Vet bills approach 1500.00. Insurance apparently covers the treatment. So, who's the smart one??!!

Tough call, thanks for the input. I spent quite a bit on my dog Bo in his last years with his cancer. I think insurance companies make bad Lawyers look like Eagle Scouts. I'll have to look at rate's with a firm break down of what's covered.

I had my dog added to my car insurance. It covers expences if my dog is hurt in an accident.

I recall a Sunday Paper Magazine article some years ago that had Vets pushing animal health insurance. "Its the only way we will get our income in-line with Doctors and Dentists."

Choose your Vet well.

If your hunting dog is fat, then you aren't getting enough exercise. Smiler

I wonder if insurance is really required in a pet/ owner scenario.

My dog has no vices since I allow none. My dog exercises as required since I dictate so. Meals are regulated, breeding was carefully researched. I believe many physical defects can be averted since the pet has little to no final say in their own conditioning regimien.

Although it is true I recently spent nearly $1k on doggy dentistry, it was the 1st and only vet bill in the dogs 5 years here. Even if in the next 5 years the bill triples It would seem I'll come out ahead vs insurance purchases.

Yes, I do spend money on dog insurance! I cannot replace 3 of my bitches and they are valuable. Same goes for my 3 studs. There NFC fathers and
FC mothers are all dead now.

If a bitch has 9 puppy's and you sell them for $1,200 dollars a piece or more, it can be hard to lose a bitch with such breeding.

I have Pet Plan insurance. Hopefully it is a good company.

Anyone have any experiences with the company?

My hunting liability insurance which is obligatory here, also covers damages done by my dog. Since jagdterriers are not real socialites and don't have a highly developed sense of humour, I am glad that I have it.

It's not expensive, costs around 65 €/year, for both me and dog.

Any thoughts on insurance?

The odds on insurance are calculated to be in the insurer's favor.....only carry insurance on bills that might be way over your ability to pay.

Veterinarian insurance will eventually lead to vet bills becoming outrageous like medical insurance for humans.

No No and no. If the dog gets too injured that I can't afford it.

My Insurance is cheap a 22lf to the back of the head.

A freind once told me never buy a dog you can't afford to shoot.
